Authentication & Legalization
Authentication & Legalization for Nigerian Documents
Nigerian documents often require authentication or legalization before they can be accepted abroad. Antarch Consulting is Nigeria’s leading support provider for document authentication and legalization, also commonly referred to as document attestation, for individuals, families, institutions and applicants who need Nigerian documents prepared for international use.
Meaning of Authentication and Legalization
Document authentication is a procedure carried out by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which confirms that your Nigerian document was validly issued and can be accepted for use abroad. By verifying the signature and seal on it, and confirming that the body which issued it is recognized, authentication is what makes your document acceptable to foreign authorities. Legalization goes one step further: it is where the embassy of your destination country in Nigeria confirms that authentication, and it applies only to the countries that ask for it.
In many countries, this is handled with an apostille, a single certificate issued under the Hague Convention. Nigeria, however, is not a member of that convention, so Nigerian documents cannot be apostilled. Instead, authentication by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the Nigerian equivalent, which is part of why people use the words authentication, legalization, attestation, and apostille almost interchangeably. What your document actually needs depends on where you are taking it: some countries accept the Ministry of Foreign Affairs step on its own, others also require their embassy in Nigeria to legalize it, and a few, such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, will often accept your English-language Nigerian documents directly for ordinary immigration.
When you need authentication or legalization
Authentication and legalization is typically required when you intend to use your Nigerian document abroad for immigration or other official purposes. This applies whether you are handling it yourself or an employer, recruiter, or global mobility partner is arranging it on your behalf. Common situations where you may need authentication or legalization for your Nigerian documents are as follows:
Visas, residence and citizenship
When you apply for a visa, residence permit, or citizenship abroad, the authority usually has to trust your Nigerian civil or police documents before it will accept them.
Study abroad
When you submit a Nigerian degree, transcript, or WAEC and NECO result to a foreign school or credential evaluator, it often has to be authenticated first.
Marriage abroad
When you marry or register a marriage in another country, you are normally asked for authenticated Nigerian single-status and birth documents.
Work abroad
When you take up employment overseas, your credentials or police character certificate often have to be verified before you can start.
Family reunification
When you bring a spouse or children to join you abroad, the embassy usually needs your Nigerian marriage and birth records authenticated.
Business and legal matters
When you register a company, sign contracts, or handle court and legal matters abroad, your Nigerian corporate or court documents may need authentication.
Wherever you are headed, it helps to begin with the relevant guide, whether that is a destination, studying abroad, working abroad, marrying abroad, or family reunification.
How our document service works
We handle the whole process for you and keep it clear at every stage. A typical case runs like this:
1. Assessment
We confirm the document type, the destination country, and whether authentication, legalization, translation, or a preliminary step such as Ministry of Education or Ministry of Interior confirmation applies to your case.
2. Send your document
You send the original by secure courier, or a certified copy where that is acceptable for the document type.
3. Preliminary steps
Where they are needed, we coordinate notarisation, translation, or the supporting confirmations a document requires before authentication.
4. Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication
We present the document to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja for authentication, and track it through.
5. Embassy legalization, if required
Where the destination country also requires it, we coordinate legalization at that country’s embassy or consulate in Nigeria.
6. Delivery back to you
Once everything is complete, we dispatch the authenticated or legalized document to you in Nigeria or abroad by a reliable courier.

Document Legalization Requirements by Country
Start with the country where the Nigerian document will be used. Requirements differ by receiving authority, document type, and destination instructions.
Document legalization Route – Australia
No embassy legalization. A certified English translation is needed only where a document is not in English.
Document legalization Route – Austria
For Austrian procedures requiring full legalization, VFS handles Embassy verification and legalization after Nigerian MFA authentication. VFS specifies Ministry of Education authentication for Nigerian school documents.
Document legalization Route – Belgium
Legalization is handled at the Belgian Embassy in Abuja by e-Appointment after Nigerian MFA authentication. Additional preparation depends on the document type.
Document legalization Route – Canada
Ordinary IRCC applications use their document checklist, without routine embassy legalization. A document outside English or French needs the translation package required by IRCC, with an affidavit where applicable.
Document legalization Route – China
When a Chinese authority asks for Nigerian consular legalization, confirm the document and any prior certification. The Embassy’s August 2026 notice directs non-Chinese applicants to its Abuja visa application centre and permits agent submission with a signed power of attorney.
Document legalization Route – Czech Republic
The Czech Embassy in Abuja superlegalizes certain MFA-authenticated Nigerian originals by appointment. Long-term visa and residence documents also need certified Czech translation.
Document legalization Route – Denmark
Where the Danish receiving authority requires legalization, use Embassy-approved document verification, Nigerian MFA authentication and Danish Embassy legalization of the MFA signature.
Document legalization Route – Finland
For a Finnish application that requires a Nigerian family record to be legalized, authenticate the original through Nigerian MFA. The Finnish Embassy reviews scans, then directs payment and VFS verification before it legalizes a positively verified document. English records do not automatically need translation.
Document legalization Route – France
When a French authority requires legalization, complete the required Nigerian authentication before French consular legalization. France visa applications in Nigeria accept documents in French or English.
Document legalization Route – Germany
Germany ceased legalization of Nigerian documents in 2000. German authorities verify documents directly with the issuing institution. Ask the receiving German authority.
Document legalization Route – Ireland
Irish visa rules require origin-country MFA authentication for official Nigerian documents. The Embassy of Ireland does not add a second stamp. Other receivers set their own rules.
Document legalization Route – Italy
Embassy legalization at the Italian Consulate-General in Lagos via Prenot@mi, plus a certified translation, after authentication in Nigeria.
Document legalization Route – Lithuania
No embassy in Nigeria. Authenticate in Nigeria, then legalise abroad through the chain in Lithuania (double legalization).
Document legalization Route – Malta
Identità generally requires full legalization for third-country public documents. The competent onward office for Nigerian records remains unverified. Confirm it before sending originals.
Document legalization Route – Netherlands
Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication is the legalization step. No separate Dutch embassy legalization. English documents are accepted as-is.
Document legalization Route – Norway
UDI family applications follow the case-specific certification checklist. The Norwegian Embassy requires Nigerian MFA legalization for birth and marriage records in a child passport or ID-number case. A general extra embassy stamp is unverified.
Document legalization Route – Poland
Embassy legalization booked through e-Konsulat, originals only, after authentication in Nigeria.
Document legalization Route – Portugal
Embassy legalization by online appointment, with extra verification for civil, police and academic documents.
Document legalization Route – Spain
When a Spanish procedure requires legalization, Nigerian MFA authentication is followed by the Spanish Consulate General in Lagos. Spanish translation depends on the named procedure and document.
Document legalization Route – Sweden
The Swedish Embassy in Abuja can legalize a competent Nigerian MFA signature, but the Swedish receiving authority decides whether that service is required.
Document legalization Route – United Arab Emirates
Authenticate the Nigerian document at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, then complete UAE Embassy legalization through VFS Global in Nigeria. Arabic translation is not required on this standard Nigeria-side path (English Nigerian originals are accepted for the language rule; any later Arabic request is a UAE-side receiving-authority step).
Document legalization Route – United Kingdom
Usually not required for ordinary UK visa evidence. Certified translation for non-English documents. Check GOV.UK for your route.

Important Clarifications
How these terms are used in practice
Authentication, legalization, attestation, and apostille are often used loosely and interchangeably by applicants. The required step depends on the country and the receiving authority. For some destinations, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication or legalization may be the main step. For others, embassy or destination-country legalization may also be needed. Confirm what the receiving authority expects before you proceed.
Destination rules decide the sequence
Some countries want embassy legalization after Nigerian authentication. Others only require certified copies or direct institutional verification. The destination embassy or receiving authority is the only reliable source for what applies to your specific route and document type.
Some institutions verify directly
Schools, employers, regulators, and credential evaluators may contact the issuing institution instead of relying on a stamp.
Translation rules depend on destination language and authority
Check whether translation must be certified, sworn, notarised, or completed by an approved translator.
What to Check Before You Submit
| Document type | Examples | Where it comes from | Often required abroad | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Civil status | Birth, marriage, divorce, and death certificates | The relevant registry or court, or the National Population Commission | A certified copy, authentication, legalization, or translation | Make sure the names, dates, and registry details match across all your documents. |
| Education | Degrees, transcripts, diplomas, and professional certificates | Your school, the examination body, or the relevant education authority | Verification by the institution, a sealed transcript, a credential evaluation, or authentication | Many schools and employers verify directly with the issuer, so your records need to be consistent. |
| Affidavits and declarations | Age, single status, name discrepancy, and other sworn statements | A court, a notary public, or a Commissioner for Oaths | Notarisation, authentication, translation, or a format the destination specifically asks for | An affidavit can explain a discrepancy, but it rarely replaces the original record. Most authorities still want the actual civil-status document. |
| Police and character | Police character certificate | The Nigeria Police Force, through its official channel | A current certificate, in the format and validity window the destination accepts | These certificates expire, and how long they stay valid depends on the country and the type of application. |
| Business and corporate | CAC certificate, board resolution, power of attorney | The company registry, your company secretary, or a notary | A certified copy, notarisation, legalization, or embassy handling | What each authority wants varies widely by country and by how the document will be used. |
Note:
Requirements change, and the authentication-then-legalization sequence varies by country and document type. Verify current instructions directly with the relevant embassy or receiving authority before paying, translating, couriering, or submitting documents.
