For Slovak residence documents that need higher authentication, Nigeria cannot issue an apostille, so the applicable consular superlegalization route must be followed. The Slovak Foreign Ministry publishes this requirement for residence supporting documents. Confirm the Nigerian certification and mission handling for your specific record before submission.
For residence applications, Slovak Foreign Ministry guidance says foreign-language supporting documents need an official Slovak translation. An English Nigerian record is foreign-language for this purpose. Ask the accepting mission how it wants the translation and authenticated original presented.

Obtain the correct Nigerian document
Start with the document issued by the appropriate Nigerian authority. This may be an NPC birth certificate, a Federal Marriage Registry marriage certificate, a sworn single-status document, a Police Character Certificate, or an academic certificate and transcript. Check whether the document needs verification or notarization before the next step.
Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Complete any required notarization before submitting the documents. Then follow the current Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication process in Abuja and confirm the current fee.
Superlegalize at the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Abuja
For document superlegalization in Abuja, contact the Embassy’s Consular Department and request its current appointment and document instructions. In Antarch Consulting cases as of February 2026, appointments were commonly allocated Monday to Wednesday between 9:00 a.m. and noon. This is case experience, not a published guarantee. The Embassy in Abuja does not accept Slovak national visa or residence applications; those applications from Nigerians go to the Slovak Embassy in Nairobi.
A representative may submit and collect with an authorization addressed to the Embassy. State the applicant’s name, address and passport number, the representative’s name and ID number, the document concerned, and authority for both submission and collection. Confirm the current signature and ID requirements when the appointment is assigned.
Confirm the translation requirement
If this document supports a residence application, arrange the official Slovak translation required by the Slovak Foreign Ministry. Confirm with the Embassy in Nairobi whether it wants the translation attached to the already superlegalized original and which translator or certification it accepts. Other uses may have different rules.
Separate the document step from the application venue
For a Slovak national visa or residence permit, the Slovak Embassy in Abuja says Nigerians apply through the Slovak Embassy in Nairobi. Nairobi requires an appointment for residence submissions. Do not mistake an Abuja document-legalization appointment for a visa or residence filing appointment.

Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Expecting a Nigerian apostille. Nigeria cannot issue a Hague Apostille. Where embassy legalization is required, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication must be completed first.
- Going to the Embassy before Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. The Embassy accepts documents for superlegalization only after that authentication is complete.
- Skipping or mistiming the translation. Do it in the form and language the receiving authority specifies, at the right stage.
