Document Legalization

Nigerian Document Legalization for Algeria

Algeria’s Apostille Convention took effect on 9 July 2026, but Nigeria is not a party and cannot issue an apostille for a Nigerian document. The Algerian Foreign Ministry’s legalization page mainly explains Algerian documents going abroad, not a checklist for Nigerian documents entering Algeria. Ask the Algerian school, employer, court or civil office whether your particular record needs authentication, consular legalization or translation before paying for those steps.

What Algeria actually requires

Nigeria is not a Hague Apostille Convention party, so a Nigerian public document cannot receive a Nigerian apostille. Algeria’s entry into the Apostille Convention on 9 July 2026 does not allow Nigerian-issued documents to receive a Nigerian apostille. Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication may still be required.

An Algerian consulate in London publishes a procedure for UK-issued documents, but that does not establish the preliminary stamps or submission rules for Nigerian originals in Abuja. The Algerian Embassy in Abuja is the relevant mission to ask if your Algerian recipient requires consular legalization. Confirm that it accepts your document category and which Nigerian certification it requires.

Confirm the Abuja mission’s current legalization counter process before you go: appointment rules, copies, fee, collection day, and whether your exact document type is accepted at the embassy.

Translation. French or Arabic translation may be required depending on the Algerian recipient and document type. Confirm the language and whether translation must be certified before or after consular legalization.

Which Nigerian documents this affects

The records most often prepared for Algeria are birth certificate, marriage certificate, single-status affidavit or certificate, police character certificate, WAEC certificate or degree and transcript, powers of attorney, and commercial documents.

Step by step, from Nigeria

Obtain the correct Nigerian document

Start with the document issued by the appropriate Nigerian authority. This may be an NPC birth certificate, a Federal Marriage Registry marriage certificate, a sworn single-status document, a Police Character Certificate, or an academic certificate and transcript. Check whether the document needs verification or notarization before the next step.

Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Complete only the Nigerian issuer verification or notarization that applies to the record and is requested by the Algerian recipient or confirmed consular procedure. Do not assume MFA authentication or an education-ministry step is compulsory for every birth certificate, police record or degree.

Confirm and legalize through the Embassy of Algeria in Abuja

If the Algerian recipient requires consular legalization, ask the Algerian Embassy in Abuja whether it accepts the Nigerian document and which original, preliminary authentication, copies, fee, appointment and collection arrangements apply. Do not submit or pay for an assumed sequence.

Add the accepted translation

If the Algerian recipient asks for French or Arabic, use a certified translator acceptable to that recipient and confirm whether the translation itself must also be legalized.

Timelines and planning

Allow time for the Algerian recipient and, where relevant, the Abuja embassy to confirm the actual requirements. Neither the Algerian procedure for Algerian-issued documents nor a London procedure for UK documents establishes a Nigerian MFA-to-Abuja chain or a processing time.

Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming Algeria’s Apostille Convention status allows a Nigerian-issued document to receive an apostille in Nigeria. It does not; Nigeria’s non-membership does not, by itself, establish which authentication an Algerian recipient will require.
  • Paying for Nigerian MFA authentication or going to the Algerian Embassy before confirming that your document needs consular legalization and which preliminary certification Abuja accepts.
  • Translating too early or into the wrong language. Algerian recipients may ask for French, Arabic or a specific certification format.
  • Relying on a generic agent checklist instead of written confirmation from the Algerian recipient or the Embassy of Algeria in Abuja.
