Nigerian Document Legalization for Germany
Germany does not legalize Nigerian public documents. If a German authority doubts or needs to confirm a Nigerian record, that authority can request verification through the German Consulate General in Lagos. A private applicant cannot order this verification directly.
What Germany actually requires
There is no German embassy legalization for Nigerian public documents. When a German authority or court considers it necessary, it requests verification of a Nigerian document, and the German Consulate General in Lagos carries out the verification for the whole of Nigeria. A private applicant cannot start this verification. Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication in Nigeria may sometimes be required as well, depending on the document and on the German authority you apply to, so follow that authority’s written checklist.
The process is normally handled as administrative assistance. The German authority sends the request, the Consulate General in Lagos arranges checks in Nigeria, and the result goes back to the requesting authority. The authority then decides how to use the result.
Which documents may be checked
The authority may request Nigerian birth, marriage, divorce, custody, death, identity or other civil records relevant to the case. A verification can cover the person and the related records rather than one certificate in isolation. The exact list comes from the German authority handling the marriage, family, citizenship, court or immigration procedure.
Step by step
Submit to the responsible German authority
Provide the documents required for the marriage, family, citizenship, court, immigration or other German procedure.
Let the authority initiate verification
If the authority considers verification necessary, it sends the request to the German Consulate General in Lagos. A private applicant cannot order this service directly.
Provide the requested evidence
Supply the originals, unstapled copies, forms and other evidence requested through the authority.
Wait for the authority’s decision
Respond promptly if further information is requested. The verification result returns to the authority, which decides the case.
Add Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication in Nigeria or a Federal Ministry of Education step where the German authority’s current checklist asks for it, and note that German embassy legalization is not available for Nigerian documents.
Translation
The German mission’s Nigeria verification information says translations are not required for the verification procedure itself. A German authority may still require a German translation for the application in which the document is used. Follow that authority’s checklist. A translation is not legalized or apostilled as if it were the underlying public document.
Degrees and professional recognition
Document verification and qualification recognition are different. A regulated profession requires formal recognition. For many non-regulated academic jobs, an anabin result or a ZAB Statement of Comparability may be the relevant proof. In the cases we have seen, academic certificates usually go through these recognition checks rather than Federal Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, although the university or authority receiving the certificate has the final say. The competent authority decides whether it needs German translations or certified copies. Do not send originals to a recognition body unless its instructions ask for them.
Timing
As of October 2026, the German Consulate General in Lagos states that a verification requested by a German authority takes about eight months from the time all documents are complete, and it can take longer. A separate page for certain visa identity checks gives six to eight months. These are different procedures, so use the estimate given for your case and do not make fixed travel plans around the shortest figure.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to order document verification directly from the German mission.
- Requesting German embassy legalization for Nigerian documents, which is not available.
- Adding MFA authentication or an education step without an express requirement.
- Confusing document verification with degree or professional recognition.
