Nigerian Document Legalization for France
France uses a two-stage legalization route for Nigerian public documents when the French authority receiving them requires legalization. English documents are accepted for France visa applications in Nigeria, so do not order a French translation unless the relevant procedure calls for one.
What France actually requires
There is no single document rule for every French application. Start with the checklist from the authority that will receive the record, such as a visa office, civil registry, university or employer.
When a Nigerian public document must be legalized for use in France, France Diplomatie describes the normal chain as authentication by the competent authority in the country of issue, usually its foreign ministry, followed by legalization by the French embassy or consulate responsible for that country.
Which Nigerian documents this affects
Birth and marriage records, single-status evidence, police certificates, court records and academic documents may be requested in different French procedures. The request for a document does not by itself prove that every record needs legalization or French translation.

Get the exact French checklist
Identify the document, purpose and receiving authority. A visa checklist, civil-registry request and university admission request can apply different rules.
Complete the Nigerian preparation that the document actually needs
Obtain the correct original and any verification required for that record. Do not add Federal Ministry of Education authentication to every academic document. Use it only when the French receiving authority or the applicable Nigerian process expressly requires it.
Use MFA Advanced Consular Services if authentication is required
Begin through the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs ACS portal. The process includes document-detail entry, upload, payment, tracking and an appointment stage for physical vetting. It is not a fully paperless process.
Follow the French mission’s current legalization instructions
After Nigerian authentication, use the current instructions from the French embassy or consulate responsible for Nigeria. Confirm the submission method before sending or presenting an original document.
Translation
For a France visa application lodged in Nigeria, the consular departments accept documents in French or English. A document in another language needs a translation into French or English. Other French authorities may require a French translation for their own procedure, so follow that authority’s written checklist. Translation is not an automatic part of legalizing an English Nigerian document.
Recognition is separate
A French university, employer or professional body may assess a qualification separately. Legalization confirms signatures or seals. It does not decide whether the qualification is equivalent or acceptable.
