What Egypt actually requires

Obtain the document from the appropriate Nigerian authority and complete any verification, certification or notarization required for that type of document. Then obtain Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication before Egyptian Embassy legalization.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry instructs applicants to have foreign documents certified by the foreign ministry in the issuing country before presenting them to an Egyptian mission. It also gives extra checks for some employment and academic records. Whether your Egyptian receiving office requires a further Foreign Ministry stamp in Egypt must be confirmed for that use.

Translation. Ask the Egyptian receiving authority whether an Arabic translation is required, which translator it accepts and whether translation should be completed before or after legalization.

Nigeria cannot issue a Hague Apostille. Where an Egyptian procedure requires consular legalization of a Nigerian public document, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs certification comes before submission to the Egyptian mission.

Which Nigerian documents this affects

The records most often legalized for Egypt are birth certificate, single-status certificate, marriage certificate, WAEC certificate or degree and transcript, and police character certificate.

Check the document category, not just the country

Egypt’s published consular rules distinguish types of documents. Employment contracts, experience certificates and proof of continued employment may first need a labour adviser’s certification where an Egyptian labour office exists. Foreign academic certificates may need an educational and cultural office check where such an office exists. Do not assume those offices operate for every Nigerian case; ask the Egyptian mission which checks apply to your document.

If a translation itself is being legalized, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry says the original document and the translation must both be legalized. That does not mean every English Nigerian document needs an Arabic translation. Ask the Egyptian court, civil registry, university, employer or other recipient whether it requires one.

Timelines and planning

Allow the most time for the embassy or authority that handles the documents after Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. Embassy appointments, document checks, translation requirements and collection dates are often less predictable than the Nigerian authentication step. Confirm the current fees and expected processing time before paying or sending documents.

Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid

• Expecting a Nigerian apostille. Nigeria cannot issue a Hague Apostille. Where embassy legalization is required, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication must be completed first.
• Going to the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Abuja before Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. The Embassy accepts documents for legalization only after that authentication is complete.
• Skipping or mistiming the translation. Do it in the form and language the receiving authority specifies, at the right stage.
