Nigerian Document Legalization for the United Kingdom
Most UK visa applications do not need British High Commission legalization of Nigerian documents. What matters is the evidence required for your actual route: a child Student application can need birth and parental-consent records, family applications need relationship evidence, and an overseas degree used to prove English may need Ecctis assessment.
What the United Kingdom actually requires
UK Visas and Immigration assesses evidence against the rules for the particular application. The British High Commission is not a legalization counter for Nigerian civil or academic documents submitted with ordinary UK visa applications. Do not buy Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication or embassy stamps unless the actual recipient requests them.
UK’s Legalisation Office apostilles eligible UK-issued documents only. Its official service says it cannot legalize documents issued outside the UK. A Nigerian document cannot obtain a UK apostille simply because it will be used in Britain.
Other UK recipients, such as a university, professional regulator, court or registry, can set their own original, certified-copy or verification rules. Check that institution’s instructions before assuming UKVI’s visa-evidence practice applies to it.
Which Nigerian documents this affects
A Student visa application requires a passport and CAS. An applicant under 18 also needs parental or guardian consent and a birth certificate or other government record showing the parent relationship. These are route-specific requirements, not a general birth-certificate rule for every student.
A Skilled Worker dependant must provide evidence of the claimed partner or child relationship. A marriage certificate can be relevant for a married partner; unmarried partners have a different evidence test. A family visa can require relationship and prior-marriage evidence depending on the circumstances.
A Nigerian degree used to prove English for a relevant immigration route can require an Ecctis assessment because it was awarded outside the UK. Ecctis assessment is distinct from embassy legalization, academic admission and professional licensing.
Step by step, from Nigeria
Identify the UK recipient and route
Read the current UKVI checklist for the exact visa or the instructions of the university, employer, regulator or court. Prepare only the Nigerian documents that are actually requested.
Obtain genuine, consistent records
Get birth, marriage, police or academic documents from the relevant Nigerian issuer. Correct inconsistencies in names and dates before applying; UKVI can verify records independently.
Check route-specific family and education evidence
For a minor Student applicant, check the parental-consent and birth-evidence rules. For a dependant or family application, check the relationship evidence. If using a Nigerian degree to prove English, check whether Ecctis assessment is required.
Translate only if needed
UK family visa guidance requires a certified translation of documents not in English or Welsh. Most Nigerian official records are in English, so do not order an English translation of an English original. Check the translation format for your exact route.
Submit by the method given
Follow the UKVI upload or appointment instructions, or the separate institution’s original/copy rules. Do not route Nigerian records through the UK Legalisation Office; it handles UK-issued documents.
Timelines and planning
Allow time for document procurement and any Ecctis assessment that your route actually requires. A UKVI decision or a recipient’s verification is separate from those steps.
A certificate requested by a university or regulator can have different verification requirements from UKVI visa evidence. Get the receiving body’s checklist before ordering authentication, notarization or translation.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Paying for a British High Commission legalization stamp for ordinary UKVI evidence.
- Assuming a UK apostille service can apostille a Nigerian-issued original.
- Treating Ecctis assessment of an overseas degree as the same thing as Nigerian document authentication.
- Applying the documents required for a minor Student applicant or family dependant to every UK visa case.
