Nigerian Document Legalization for Qatar
Qatar has specific attestation rules for foreign academic records, including a transcript with a bachelor’s degree. Its foreign-document attestation service can also route eligible cases through overseas missions. Confirm the receiving authority’s requirements before preparing other records.
What Qatar actually requires
Complete any verification by the Nigerian authority that issued the document, as well as any notarization required for that type of document. In some cases previously handled by Antarch Consulting, the Qatar Embassy also asked for notarization before Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. Confirm whether this applies to your document before paying.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says an educational certificate issued outside Qatar must carry certification by the issuing country’s foreign ministry or an authorized agency. For its academic-attestation service, the seal chain must end with an approved Qatari mission or a foreign mission accredited to Qatar’s Consular Affairs Department. Check whether the Qatari office using your record asks for that service and which submission channel applies.
Ask the Qatari receiving authority whether Arabic translation is required, who may translate, and whether translation must take place before or after attestation.
Nigeria cannot issue a Hague Apostille. For documents requiring legalization for Qatar, complete the Nigerian authentication and Qatar Embassy attestation steps required for the particular document.
Which Nigerian documents this affects
The document list depends on the Qatari employer, university, court or other receiving office. Qatar’s official academic service specifically covers foreign university and vocational certificates, and requires a transcript with a foreign bachelor’s degree. Civil, judicial and personal-status documents have separate attestation categories. Do not treat an academic checklist as the rule for every birth, marriage or police record.
Step by step, from Nigeria
Obtain the correct Nigerian document
Obtain the exact Nigerian record requested by the Qatari receiving office. For a bachelor’s degree submitted to Qatar MOFA’s academic-attestation service, include the transcript. Ask whether the issuing institution must verify the degree or transcript before authentication.
Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Check whether the receiving authority or consular service requires prior verification, notarization or Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication for this document. If MFA authentication applies, use its current submission process and confirm the fee before paying.
Legalize at the Embassy of the State of Qatar, Abuja
The Qatar Embassy in Abuja lists civil, personal, judicial and educational attestation services. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also launched an online overseas attestation service for eligible foreign-issued documents in December 2024. It may route a case to the Qatari mission and, if needed, to the host-country foreign ministry. Ask the Embassy or use the official portal to confirm the current channel, fees and original-document requirements before travel.
Academic documents. A bachelor’s degree must be accompanied by the official transcript. In Nigeria cases handled in September 2025, the Embassy required the original signed and stamped transcript, including its cover or "To Whom It May Concern" page. Student copies were not accepted, and both the degree and transcript were legalized. Confirm the current format before submission.
Confirm the translation requirement
Ask the Qatari receiving authority whether an Arabic translation is required, which translator it accepts and whether translation should be completed before or after attestation.
Timelines and planning
Qatar MOFA lists QAR 100 for its academic-certificate attestation service. Embassy fees in naira and submission schedules can change. Antarch Consulting handled cases in September 2025 with different Abuja charges and intake arrangements, but those observations are not a current official fee schedule. Confirm the charge and collection date for each item before paying.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming an apostille or a universal embassy sequence. Nigeria does not issue Hague apostilles. Follow the document-specific certification and consular route confirmed by the receiving office.
- Assuming an older embassy intake schedule still applies. Check the Embassy’s current instructions or the Qatar MOFA overseas attestation portal, and confirm the necessary Nigerian certification for your document.
- Skipping or mistiming the translation. Do it in the form and language the receiving authority specifies, at the right stage.
