Nigerian Document Legalization for Italy
How to prepare Nigerian documents for Italian consular legalization, including current translation, education and Declaration of Value rules.
Start with the receiving authority
Confirm whether the Italian university, registry, visa office or other authority wants consular legalization, a Declaration of Value, CIMEA evidence or another procedure. These are not interchangeable.
What Italy actually requires
A Nigerian public document that requires Italian consular legalization is first prepared through the competent Nigerian authorities and then submitted to the Italian Consulate General in Lagos. The current consular page directs applicants to book through Prenot@mi.
For this legalization service, the document normally needs an Italian translation presented with it, unless a published exception applies. That rule belongs to the Italian legalization process. It should not be turned into a claim that every English Nigerian document must always be translated for every Italian purpose.
Step by step for a general document
Ask the Italian receiver what it needs
Confirm the exact document, acceptable issue date and whether it wants consular legalization, certified translation or another form of verification.
Prepare the Nigerian record
Obtain the correct original and complete any issuer, registry, notarial or ministry step required for that document and purpose.
Use Nigerian MFA authentication where required
Start through the Advanced Consular Services portal, upload the requested file and pay through the live method. Follow the portal’s appointment step for physical vetting.
Arrange the Italian translation
Use the translation method accepted by the Italian Consulate or receiving authority. Keep every name, date and document number consistent with the source record.
Book and submit through Prenot@mi
Use the applicant’s own account and follow the current Lagos Consulate instructions. Confirm the current document form, representative rule, fee and collection arrangement before attending.
Education documents and Declaration of Value
The Italian Consulate’s May 2026 Nigeria checklist gives a specific process for education-document legalization and Declaration of Value applications. The named academic documents are authenticated by the Nigerian education ministry, then legalized by the Nigerian MFA and translated into Italian. The birth record in that education file is also MFA legalized and translated.
A Declaration of Value is an information document. It does not itself recognise the qualification or make it equivalent to an Italian degree. The Italian university or competent authority decides recognition for the stated purpose.
CIMEA can issue statements of comparability and verification. Whether those statements can replace or accompany a Declaration of Value depends on what the Italian institution accepts. Ask the institution before ordering either service.
Translation
Italian translation is normally part of the consular legalization route described by the Lagos Consulate. The translator or certification method must meet the current consular or receiving-authority instructions. Do not assume that a translation alone proves the underlying Nigerian document is authentic.
Common mistakes
- Treating the education and Declaration of Value checklist as the rule for every Italian document.
- Assuming a Declaration of Value is the same as qualification recognition.
- Ordering CIMEA evidence without asking the Italian institution what it accepts.
- Relying on an old claim that Prenot@mi always takes a fixed number of months.
- Presenting a recent field experience about one birth-document file as a universal consular rule.
