Nigerian Document Legalization for Kuwait
For an Article 18 work-residence application, Kuwait requires a Nigerian police certificate to be authenticated by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the Kuwait Embassy. A non-Arab applicant must also provide the required Arabic translation. Other Nigerian documents should follow the same steps when the Kuwaiti authority asks for authentication.
What Kuwait actually requires
Nigeria is not a Hague Apostille Convention party, so Nigerian documents cannot use a Nigerian apostille. Kuwait uses Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication followed by embassy legalization for relevant foreign records.
For Article 18 private-sector residence, Kuwait Government Online requires a recent police certificate authenticated by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Kuwait Embassy. A non-Arab applicant must also provide the required translation, and the certificate must still be within Kuwait’s stated validity period.
Obtain civil, academic, professional, court or company documents from the appropriate Nigerian authority and complete any notarization required for that type of document. The documents should then be authenticated by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and submitted to the Kuwait Embassy if the Kuwaiti authority requires embassy legalization. Some documents may need further attestation by Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs or another check after arrival.
Translation. Confirm whether Arabic translation must happen before or after embassy authentication and whether the receiving authority requires a Kuwait-approved translator. Do not translate blindly.

The most common records are police character certificate, birth and marriage certificates, single-status evidence, academic and professional qualifications, medical evidence, employment contract, power of attorney, affidavit and commercial records.

Obtain the correct Nigerian document
Check that names, dates and signatures are correct. Police, medical and civil-status documents can expire quickly, so work backwards from the date when you expect to submit the application.
Complete any required verification or notarization
Academic certificates may need education-authority verification. Professional records may need confirmation from the regulator, court documents may need court certification, company records may need Corporate Affairs Commission preparation, and private documents may need notarization.
Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Complete Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. Kuwait specifically requires this step for a police certificate used in an Article 18 work-residence application.
Authenticate through the Kuwait Embassy
Before attending, confirm which documents the Embassy in Abuja accepts and its current appointment, copy, fee, payment and collection requirements. Submit the document after Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication.
Translate and complete any required step in Kuwait
Use the Arabic translation method accepted by the ministry, court, employer or institution receiving the document. Ask whether Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs or another Kuwaiti authority must also attest or verify it.
Timelines and planning
Allow time for the Kuwait Embassy appointment and any required Arabic translation. Police and medical documents may expire quickly, so obtaining them too early can force you to repeat the process even after Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication is complete.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Submitting an expired police certificate or completing it too early for the residence timetable.
- Relying on a recruiter’s or employer’s informal scan instead of confirming the official authentication and translation requirements.
- Translating before confirming whether the translation must follow embassy authentication or be completed by an approved Kuwait-side translator.
- Assuming Kuwait Embassy authentication replaces any later Kuwait Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation, qualification assessment, professional licensing or employer verification.
