Document Legalization

Nigerian Document Legalization for Denmark

Where Denmark requires a Nigerian document to be legalized, first arrange verification through a legal practitioner approved by the Danish Embassy. Then obtain Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication and finally Danish Embassy legalization.

What Denmark actually requires

Denmark does not require legalization for every use. Where the Danish receiving authority requires it, the Nigeria-specific process begins with verification through a legal practitioner approved by the Danish Embassy, followed by Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication and Embassy legalization.

For a document that Denmark requires to be legalized, first arrange verification through a legal practitioner approved by the Danish Embassy. After verification, obtain Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. The Danish Embassy then legalizes the Ministry official’s signature.

The Danish Embassy names marriage and divorce records for marriage or family reunification, and birth, death, adoption or sole-custody records for relevant family, work or residence applications. Check the receiving authority’s checklist for your own case.

Nigeria cannot issue a Hague Apostille. Where Denmark requires legalization, the Nigeria-specific process is document verification, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication and Danish Embassy legalization.

Which Nigerian documents this affects

Common Nigerian records that may need preparation include NPC birth certificates, Federal Marriage Registry marriage certificates, single-status documents, Police Character Certificates, academic certificates and transcripts. Confirm which records need authentication or legalization for the purpose in question.

Step by step, from Nigeria

Obtain the correct Nigerian document

Start with the document issued by the appropriate Nigerian authority. This may be an NPC birth certificate, a Federal Marriage Registry marriage certificate, a sworn single-status document, a Police Character Certificate, or an academic certificate and transcript. Check whether the document needs verification or notarization before the next step.

Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

When the Danish Embassy’s verification and legalization route applies, arrange verification through an embassy-approved legal practitioner. Begin the Nigerian MFA request through Advanced Consular Services online and follow its physical-vetting appointment instructions. The Embassy can then legalize the MFA official’s signature. Its published route does not impose Ministry of Education or Ministry of Interior clearance on every record.

Legalize at the Danish Embassy in Abuja

After verification and Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, pay one Embassy fee per document by bank transfer and request a consular appointment by email or by calling on Monday or Wednesday between noon and 2:00 p.m. Take the original and proof of transfer. Cash is not accepted.

Timelines and planning

Prepare only the civil documents listed for the particular Danish application. Allow time for practitioner verification, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, the Embassy appointment and any translation required by the receiving authority.

Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying for family reunification before the civil documents are authenticated and legalized.
  • Going to the embassy before Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication.
  • Assuming an apostille applies; Denmark legalizes Nigerian documents instead.

Verify with official sources

Requirements change. Always confirm the current procedure directly before you start the process or submit documents.
