Document Legalization
Nigerian Document Legalization for Slovenia
Slovenia has no resident embassy in Nigeria. Ask the Slovenian authority receiving the document to confirm whether full legalization is required and which Slovenian mission is responsible for Nigerian documents.
What Slovenia actually requires
The correct treatment depends on who will use the Nigerian document. A civil registry or residence office may require legalization of a birth, marriage or police record. A Nigerian degree sent to Slovenia’s ENIC-NARIC centre for assessment for employment follows a separate education procedure. A 2026 amendment to Slovenian law says foreign education certificates do not routinely need legalization in that assessment; the authority may investigate authenticity and request additional evidence if it has doubts. Do not order MFA and embassy stamps for a degree solely because an assessment is planned.
For a public civil or police document, obtain the specific Slovenian office’s current instructions before paying for authentication. If it requires full legalization of a Nigerian original, ask which preliminary Nigerian authentication and Slovenian diplomatic step it accepts. Slovenia’s public Nigeria representation listing does not identify a resident mission that accepts originals, so the applicable office must be confirmed with the Slovenian authority. This question does not change the separate ENIC-NARIC assessment rule.
Translation depends on the procedure. The official ENIC-NARIC assessment application lists a certified Slovenian translation of the certificate or diploma among its documents. That requirement should not be applied automatically to an unrelated residence or civil document. Ask the office receiving that record which language and translator it accepts.
Which Nigerian documents this affects
Relevant records can include birth, marriage and single-status certificates, police certificates, degrees and transcripts. For education, decide whether the task is employment assessment by ENIC-NARIC or recognition for further study by the institution. Those are different decisions; neither is made by an embassy legalization stamp.
Step by step, from Nigeria
Obtain the correct Nigerian document
Start with the document issued by the appropriate Nigerian authority. This may be an NPC birth certificate, a Federal Marriage Registry marriage certificate, a sworn single-status document, a Police Character Certificate, or an academic certificate and transcript. Check whether the document needs verification or notarization before the next step.
Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
For a civil, police or private document, complete only the verification or certification required by the office that will use it. If it requires full legalization, confirm the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Slovenian mission steps before paying. For ENIC-NARIC employment assessment of a degree, use its own application and translation checklist instead of assuming MFA authentication.
Confirm which embassy handles Nigerian documents
If the Slovenian recipient requires consular legalization, ask it or Slovenia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs to identify the competent mission for a Nigerian original. Obtain that office’s submission and return instructions before sending a certificate. Do not assume that a visa centre provides document legalization.
Confirm the translation requirement
For ENIC-NARIC employment assessment, the published document list includes the original degree, a copy, a certified Slovenian translation and evidence of the education programme. For a university admission, residence or civil procedure, follow that separate office’s translation checklist.
Timelines and planning
Plan around the actual recipient’s document deadline. ENIC-NARIC assessment, university recognition and consular legalization are separate procedures with different processing arrangements. Ask the Slovenian office whether it needs original documents, certified copies or additional issuer verification before paying for a diplomatic chain.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Expecting a Nigerian apostille. Nigeria cannot issue a Hague Apostille. For a civil or police record requiring full legalization, confirm the accepted Nigerian and Slovenian authentication steps first; a degree submitted for ENIC-NARIC assessment does not routinely need legalization under the 2026 amendment.
- Sending an original before the Slovenian receiving authority identifies the competent mission and confirms the required chain.
- Applying the ENIC-NARIC degree-assessment translation checklist to every Slovenian procedure, or assuming that legalizing a degree replaces education assessment.

Requirements change. Always confirm the current procedure directly before you start the process or submit documents.
