Nigerian Document Legalization for Austria
Austria normally requires Nigerian documents to pass a VFS verification process before Embassy legalization. Most cases take months; Police Character Certificates follow a separate, faster route.
What Austria actually requires
For documents entering the Austrian Embassy’s VFS verification and legalization process, VFS requires Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication first. Ask the Austrian receiving authority which documents need this process.
Most Nigerian documents that require Austrian legalization first enter the Embassy’s verification process through a booked VFS appointment in Abuja or Lagos. A Nigerian Police Character Certificate is the published exception. It does not require verification. For legalization of this certificate alone, submit through VFS in Abuja on Wednesday or Lagos on Tuesday, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., without an appointment. Bring written proof that the certificate is needed in Austria.
Nigeria cannot issue a Hague Apostille. For Austrian legalization, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication comes first. Verification, where required, and the later legalization submission are handled through VFS on the Embassy’s instructions.

Step by step, from Nigeria
Obtain the correct Nigerian document
Start with the document issued by the appropriate Nigerian authority. This may be an NPC birth certificate, a Federal Marriage Registry marriage certificate, a sworn single-status document, a Police Character Certificate, or an academic certificate and transcript. Check whether the document needs verification or notarization before the next step.
Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
For documents entering Austrian VFS verification and legalization, VFS requires Nigerian MFA-authenticated originals. Start the MFA request through Advanced Consular Services online, then follow its appointment instructions for physical vetting. VFS also requires Ministry of Education authentication for Nigerian school documents. Do not apply that education step to unrelated records.
Start Austrian verification and legalization through VFS
First obtain written proof that an Austrian university or authority requires the identified documents to be fully legalized. Book the VFS verification appointment and take the MFA-authenticated originals, completed questionnaire, passport data-page copy and a second complete set of high-quality colour copies. After a positive verification result, the Embassy emails instructions. Return to VFS with the approved originals and required printouts to begin legalization. You do not need another appointment for this stage.
Personal VFS submission is normally required. One adult may attend for a family. A person resident in Austria or outside the Embassy’s area may use the limited intermediary route with an original signed power of attorney, Austrian registration evidence and a colour copy of the residence card.
For Nigerian school documents in the VFS process, VFS expressly requires both Ministry of Education and Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. Confirm the exact academic document and any additional evidence with VFS before your appointment.
Timelines and planning
Allow roughly four to six months for verification, sometimes longer. Verification is charged in naira at the Embassy rate: EUR 400 equivalent for one person or EUR 500 equivalent for a family of up to five, plus VFS service fees. After a positive result, legalization is EUR 80 equivalent per document. Confirm the current naira amounts before paying.
Police Character Certificate only. This certificate does not go through verification. For its legalization alone, take the MFA-authenticated original and written proof that it is needed in Austria to VFS in Abuja on Wednesday or Lagos on Tuesday, between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m., except on holidays. No appointment is needed for this step. The published legalization fee is EUR 80 per document, paid in naira at the Embassy’s rate through VFS. Confirm the current naira amount before paying.
If the Austrian receiving authority requires a German translation, normally arrange it after legalization. Translation is not part of the Embassy’s verification or legalization procedure.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating the procedure as a one-day Embassy visit instead of a months-long VFS verification process.
- Going to the embassy before Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication.
- Assuming an apostille applies; it does not for Nigerian documents.
