Nigerian Document Legalization for Ghana
Some Nigerian documents used in Ghana need attestation, depending on the Ghanaian office that will receive them. The High Commission in Abuja offers attestation; ask its consular section which originals and prior authentication it accepts. Ghana also has a Consulate-General in Lagos, but its public information does not confirm that the Abuja attestation service is available there.
What Ghana actually requires
Nigeria does not issue Hague apostilles. If a Ghanaian recipient requires formal authentication or attestation of a Nigerian document, confirm the accepted Nigerian and Ghanaian steps for that document. The lack of a Nigerian apostille does not mean every document used in Ghana must be attested.
When a Ghanaian recipient asks for an attested Nigerian document, confirm which original and preliminary Nigerian authentication the High Commission will accept. The published Abuja fee sheet establishes an attestation service, not a universal requirement to attest every document submitted in Ghana. Ask the school, employer, court or registry that will use your record what it actually needs.
The Abuja fee sheet distinguishes regular and express attestation and lists different service targets. Confirm the current fee, document category, copies, identification, payment and collection arrangement with the office that will handle the submission. Do not assume the same service is available in Lagos without confirmation.
Translation. Most Nigerian public records are in English, so translation is generally not the main step. A Ghanaian school, regulator, court or registry can still require direct issuer verification, a certified copy or a prescribed Ghanaian form.
Which Nigerian documents this affects
Common records include NPC birth certificate, marriage certificate, single-status evidence, police character certificate, WAEC and tertiary records, professional credentials, affidavit, power of attorney, employment record and commercial document.
Step by step, from Nigeria
Obtain the document from the correct Nigerian authority
Correct errors in names, dates or other details before authentication. Ghana High Commission attestation will not correct an inaccurate or improperly issued document.
Complete any required verification or notarization
Academic records may need school or education-authority verification. Court documents may need court certification, company records may need Corporate Affairs Commission preparation, and private documents may need notarization.
Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
If the Ghanaian recipient and High Commission require consular attestation, confirm the accepted Nigerian authentication sequence with the High Commission before attending. Do not obtain MFA authentication or book travel solely because a Nigerian document will be used in Ghana.
Book the Ghana High Commission appointment
Contact the Abuja consular section about its attestation requirements and appointment process. If Lagos is more convenient, ask its consular section whether it offers this service for your document and which instructions apply.
Check the final Ghanaian recipient requirement
Ask whether the school, employer, immigration office, regulator, court or registry also requires direct verification or a Ghana-specific form.
Timelines and planning
The Abuja fee sheet issued in 2024 lists five working days for regular attestation and 24 working hours for express service. Those are published service targets, not a guarantee or proof of today’s fee or queue. Confirm the current service level and timing before booking; document correction, Nigerian authentication and recipient checks can add time.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming ECOWAS travel rights remove document-attestation requirements for study, work, court or civil use.
- Taking a photocopy or unverified academic or private record straight to the High Commission.
- Treating the High Commission’s published service target as the total time for any issuer verification, Nigerian authentication or recipient checks that actually apply.
- Paying an intermediary without confirming the current fee and appointment directly with the High Commission.

Requirements change. Always confirm the current procedure directly before you start the process or submit documents.
