Document Legalization

Nigerian Document Legalization for Ghana

The Ghana High Commission provides document-attestation services through its Abuja and Lagos offices. First obtain the correct Nigerian document and complete any verification, certification or notarization required for that document type. Then obtain Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication before attending the High Commission appointment, if the Ghanaian authority requires attestation.

What Ghana actually requires

Nigeria is not a Hague Apostille Convention party. Nigerian documents therefore use authentication and attestation rather than a Nigerian apostille.

A Nigerian document must complete the required authentication steps in Nigeria before the Ghana High Commission can attest it. The High Commission provides this service by appointment through its Abuja and Lagos offices.

The High Commission publishes a standard processing target and a current fee document, but the applicant should confirm the exact document type, copies, identification, payment and collection details before attending.

Translation. Most Nigerian public records are in English, so translation is generally not the main step. A Ghanaian school, regulator, court or registry can still require direct issuer verification, a certified copy or a prescribed Ghanaian form.

Which Nigerian documents this affects

Common records include NPC birth certificate, marriage certificate, single-status evidence, police character certificate, WAEC and tertiary records, professional credentials, affidavit, power of attorney, employment record and commercial document.

Step by step, from Nigeria

Obtain the document from the correct Nigerian authority

Correct errors in names, dates or other details before authentication. Ghana High Commission attestation will not correct an inaccurate or improperly issued document.

Complete any required verification or notarization

Academic records may need school or education-authority verification. Court documents may need court certification, company records may need Corporate Affairs Commission preparation, and private documents may need notarization.

Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Complete Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication before attending the Ghana High Commission appointment where attestation is required.

Book the Ghana High Commission appointment

Contact the High Commission for an Abuja or Lagos appointment and confirm current copies, identity, fee, payment and collection requirements for your exact document.

Check the final Ghanaian recipient requirement

Ask whether the school, employer, immigration office, regulator, court or registry also requires direct verification or a Ghana-specific form.

Timelines and planning

The service pages state 72 hours from submission, while the attached fee schedule lists five working days for regular service and 24 working hours for express service. Confirm the service level, fee and timeline when booking. The full process can take longer because you may first need document verification, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication and an available appointment. The Ghanaian school, employer, court or registry may also carry out its own checks afterwards.

Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming ECOWAS travel rights remove document-attestation requirements for study, work, court or civil use.
  • Taking a photocopy or unverified academic or private record straight to the High Commission.
  • Treating the High Commission’s published processing time as the total time needed for verification, Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication and embassy attestation.
  • Paying an intermediary without confirming the current fee and appointment directly with the High Commission.

Verify with official sources

Requirements change. Always confirm the current procedure directly before you start the process or submit documents.

This page is general guidance for Nigerians, not legal advice. Document rules differ by purpose (study, work, family, marriage) and by the institution receiving your document. Confirm the exact requirement with the relevant authority before acting.
