Italy for Nigerians

Italy can attract Nigerians through affordable public universities, scholarships, family reunification and work opportunities in selected sectors. Italian is important for most jobs and daily life, while employer-led work entry is limited by annual quotas, so study or seasonal work should not be treated as an automatic path to permanent residence.

Study in Italy

Nigerian applicants should first apply to an Italian university or other recognized higher-education institution. For degree programmes, the pre-enrolment request used for the study visa must be submitted through Universitaly, the Italian Government's free official portal. Admission or validation by a university does not guarantee a visa. The consulate still checks the applicant's finances, accommodation, academic history and reason for study. After arriving in Italy, a non-EU student staying for more than three months must apply for a residence permit within eight working days. The application kit is collected from a Poste Italiane branch with the Sportello Amico service and is followed by an appointment at the Questura, the provincial police immigration office, for photographs and fingerprints.

Funds requirement

For the 2026/27 academic year, the official study procedure uses a minimum living-funds figure of EUR 10,179.85 for the year, in addition to the cost of returning home. The applicant may use personal or parental funds, a qualifying scholarship or support from an accepted institution or sponsor, but the consulate will look at the source and financial history rather than the closing balance alone. Tuition, accommodation and health-insurance evidence are assessed separately. Confirm the checklist used by the Italian mission handling applications from Nigeria before submitting the visa file.

Work in Italy

Most non-EU workers enter Italy through the Decreto Flussi, the Government's quota system for admitting foreign workers. The 2026-2028 programme provides 164,850 entries across its different categories for 2026, and Nigeria is among the countries included in designated non-seasonal quotas. A genuine Italian employer must make the application through the Ministry of the Interior's Portale ALI. If it is approved, the employer receives a nulla osta, meaning the official clearance that allows the worker to apply for the work visa. A recruiter cannot sell a quota place or issue this clearance. Before paying anyone, verify the employer, the proposed contract and the official application reference. Separate routes outside the quota system may apply to EU Blue Card workers, intra-company transfers and a limited number of other highly qualified or specialist cases.

Routes available

The main routes are quota-based employment under Decreto Flussi, including seasonal and approved non-seasonal categories. The EU Blue Card covers qualifying highly skilled work. Eligible intra-company transfers use a separate route. The correct route depends on the job, salary, employer and filing window. A general job offer is not enough where the employer has not completed the required work-clearance application.

Permanent residency and citizenship in Italy

A non-EU national may qualify for the EU long-term residence permit after at least five years of lawful residence in Italy. The applicant must normally show stable income, suitable accommodation and the required knowledge of Italian. Continuity matters: absences are generally expected to remain below six consecutive months and ten months in total during the five-year period, unless a permitted serious reason applies. The permit gives stronger and more stable residence rights, but it is not the same as Italian citizenship and it can be lost after prolonged absence from Italy or the European Union.

Citizenship

For most Nigerian adults, citizenship by naturalization normally requires ten years of lawful residence. The applicant must also meet the current language, income, criminal-record and residence-continuity requirements. Reaching ten years does not make citizenship automatic. It makes the person eligible to apply. Italy generally allows dual citizenship, so an approved applicant is not normally required by Italy to give up Nigerian citizenship.

Family Reunification in Italy

A qualifying resident in Italy may apply to bring eligible family members. The sponsor normally starts the process online with the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione, the local immigration office, and requests a family-reunification nulla osta. In this context, the nulla osta is the official clearance issued before the family member applies for a visa. The office checks the sponsor's residence status, income and housing. After approval, the family member applies for the visa and presents the Nigerian civil documents required to prove the relationship. Family members of Italian or other EU citizens follow a different procedure and do not use the ordinary nulla osta process.

Eligible family members

Eligible relatives normally include a spouse aged at least 18, minor children, adult dependent children with serious health-related inability to support themselves, and dependent parents in limited circumstances. The rules for parents are stricter and may require evidence that no other child can support them in the country of origin.

Sponsor requirement

The sponsor must hold an eligible Italian residence permit and show suitable accommodation and enough lawful income for the family size. The local authority may inspect or certify the housing. A temporary address or informal arrangement that does not meet occupancy rules can delay the application even where the relationship itself is genuine.

Income requirement

The income threshold is linked to Italy's annual social allowance and rises with each family member being sponsored. Because the figure changes and the calculation can differ for larger families, use the current amount published for the year of application. Income of eligible household members may be considered where the rules permit it.

Evidence needed

The visa file may require a marriage certificate, birth certificates, passports, the sponsor's residence permit, proof of income, and the official housing certificate. Nigerian civil documents must follow the legalization and Italian translation procedure accepted by the Italian mission. Names, dates and family relationships should be consistent across the passports and civil records.

Marriage in Italy

A civil marriage in Italy is arranged through the Comune, the municipal or town council office for the place where the marriage will be registered. A Nigerian who wants to marry in Italy will normally be asked for a nulla osta al matrimonio. This is a certificate of no impediment confirming that, under the person's own national law, there is no legal reason he or she cannot marry. It is not an immigration approval or residence permit.

Documents required

Expect to provide valid passports, birth records, the certificate of no impediment, and any final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate where relevant. The Comune may ask for additional civil-status records depending on nationality and personal history. Nigerian documents normally need the authentication, Italian consular legalization and certified Italian translation required for foreign civil records. Ask the particular Comune for its written checklist before arranging translations or travelling.

Process notes

Contact the Comune where the marriage is intended and obtain its exact checklist. Prepare the Nigerian civil records and certificate of no impediment in the form the Comune accepts, complete any required legalization and translation, and submit the documents for the local civil-status checks and marriage notice. The Comune then confirms the ceremony date and witnesses. Italy does not issue a special visa simply because someone plans to marry there, and the marriage ceremony does not by itself grant the foreign spouse a right to remain. Any family or residence application is made separately.

Using Nigerian Documents in Italy

Confirm whether the receiver wants consular legalization, a Declaration of Value, CIMEA evidence or another process. A Declaration of Value is informative and is not degree recognition. Whether CIMEA comparability or verification is accepted depends on the Italian institution.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication

For a Nigerian document that requires Italian consular legalization, use the Nigerian preparation required for that document and purpose. Nigerian MFA requests now begin through Advanced Consular Services and include a later appointment for physical vetting. The current Lagos education and Declaration of Value checklist separately requires education-ministry authentication for the named academic documents before Nigerian MFA legalization.

Embassy legalization

The Italian Consulate General in Lagos handles consular legalization through Prenot@mi. Confirm the current document form, representative rule, fee and collection arrangement on the live consular instructions before attending.

Translation requirement

Italian translation is normally required for the Lagos consular legalization service, unless a published exception applies. This is not a blanket rule for every use of an English Nigerian document in Italy. Follow the receiving authority's exact checklist.

Affected document types

NPC birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree, single-status certificate, degree certificate and transcript, WAEC or NECO certificates, and police character certificate.

Asylum & Legal Stay in Italy

A person in Italy can ask for asylum at the border police or at the immigration office of the nearest Questura, which is the provincial police headquarters. The request can be made orally or in writing, in the person's own language, and an interpreter should be provided. Police record the application, take photographs and fingerprints, and complete the C3 form containing the person's identity, journey and reasons for seeking protection. The substantive interview is then conducted by a Territorial Commission, the independent panel that decides whether the applicant qualifies for refugee status or another form of protection.

Legal aid / support

A lawyer is not normally required to register the first asylum application. However, anyone who receives a refusal, a removal decision or notice affecting the right to remain should obtain qualified legal help immediately because the appeal deadline can be short. A lawyer is required for a court appeal, and free legal aid may be available to a person who cannot afford one. A person in prison or a pre-removal centre may still state that he or she wants to seek asylum. UNHCR Italy and its partner organisations provide free information and can point applicants to local legal and reception services.

Asylum is decided on the facts of the individual case, including the person's account and any available evidence. Keep copies of police papers, interview notices and decisions, attend every appointment, and tell the authority promptly if the address or contact details change.
Rules and document requirements can change. Confirm with the relevant authority before you submit documents or pay anyone.
