Work in Slovakia

A Slovak employer normally reports the vacancy and supports a temporary residence application for the specific job. The labour-market step and documents depend on the occupation and permit category. Highly qualified applicants may use the EU Blue Card. Ask for the written contract, salary, permit category and employer filing evidence before travelling.

The main routes are temporary residence for employment, the EU Blue Card and defined seasonal or special employment categories. A Slovak invitation or job offer is not by itself permission to work; the residence and employment conditions must both be met.

Permanent residency and citizenship in Slovakia

After five years of qualifying continuous legal residence, a Nigerian may be able to apply for long-term residence. Permanent residence also exists for specific family and other statutory grounds. Study time and absences are treated under their own counting rules, so do not assume that five calendar years in Slovakia automatically qualify.

Citizenship normally needs around eight years of continuous permanent residence. Slovakia's dual-nationality rules are restrictive, so confirm whether you can keep your Nigerian passport before you start down this path.

Family Reunification in Slovakia

A Slovak citizen or qualifying resident may bring a spouse and minor children through family reunification. The sponsor's status, the genuine relationship, accommodation and financial support are central. Confirm whether the sponsor's particular permit permits immediate reunification and whether the family member can work on the resulting status without a separate employment authorization.

Marriage in Slovakia

A Slovak civil marriage is registered by the local registry office, called the matrika. In plain terms, this is the municipal office that checks the papers, schedules the ceremony and records the marriage.

A Nigerian applicant may need a passport, birth certificate, proof of lawful stay and evidence of single status or legal capacity to marry, plus any final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate. The registry decides which documents need legalization and official Slovak translation.

Ask the registry for its foreign-national checklist well before the ceremony, complete the required legalization and translation and file the papers within their validity period. The Slovak Embassy may require a written authorization if another person submits legalization documents on the applicant's behalf. Marriage and spouse residence remain separate processes.

Using Nigerian Documents in Slovakia

The Slovak Embassy in Abuja handles consular document enquiries, but it does not accept Slovak national visa or residence applications. Nigerians submit those applications to the Slovak Embassy in Nairobi. Confirm the superlegalization procedure for each supporting document with the relevant mission.

For residence applications, Slovak Foreign Ministry guidance requires official Slovak translations of foreign-language supporting documents, including English Nigerian records. Confirm the accepted translator and presentation order with the mission receiving the application. Other uses may differ.

A person who needs international protection can tell the Slovak border police on arrival. A person already inside Slovakia applies in person at the Police Corps asylum department in Humenne.
