Egypt for Nigerians
Egypt remains an affordable and familiar study destination for many Nigerians, particularly in medicine, engineering, Arabic and Islamic studies, with notable scholarship opportunities at Al-Azhar. Applicants should confirm the teaching language and recognition of the qualification in Nigeria, and should be realistic about local employment and long-term residence prospects after graduation.

Study in Egypt
Study starts with admission to an Egyptian university, then a student visa and residence. Al-Azhar University runs an annual scholarship scheme for Nigerian students, mainly in Islamic and some scientific fields, typically with a tuition exemption and a monthly allowance. Many degrees are taught in Arabic, with English-medium options in medicine and some programmes.
Proof of funds, or a scholarship award such as an Al-Azhar place, for the student visa and residence. Confirm with the university and the Egyptian Embassy.
Work in Egypt
Most foreign workers need an Egyptian employer to sponsor the work-permit process through the Ministry responsible for labour, followed by the residence steps. The employer may have to justify the foreign appointment, provide company and contract records and comply with limits on foreign staff. University, technical, investment and specialist roles are more realistic than informal recruitment. Do not begin work on the strength of an offer letter alone.
Routes include employer-sponsored work permits, approved technical or specialist appointments, investment or business residence, and academic or research posts. The employer should identify the permit category and the authority handling it.
Permanent residency and citizenship in Egypt
Long-term residence is possible through extended stay, family ties or investment, and Egypt has introduced residence options linked to property and deposits. It is more open to settling than the Gulf states, though most Nigerians come to study or work for a period.
Citizenship by naturalisation is restrictive and slow, generally needing around ten years of residence, with separate investment-based routes. Egypt permits dual citizenship but usually expects you to notify the authorities, so confirm the current position before relying on it.
Family Reunification in Egypt
Egyptian citizens and residents can sponsor a spouse and children for family residence. The relationship and the sponsor's status are assessed.
Spouse and children, and dependent relatives in some cases.
An Egyptian citizen or a foreign resident with valid status, who can evidence the relationship and support.
No single published threshold; the sponsor shows the ability to support family members. Confirm with the authorities.
Marriage and birth certificates, together with the sponsor's residence or Egyptian identity document. The Egyptian authority handling the family application will state which Nigerian records need embassy legalization or Arabic translation.
Marriage in Egypt
A marriage involving a foreign national may be completed through the Ministry of Justice's foreigners' marriage office or another competent Egyptian civil-status or notarial office, depending on both parties' nationalities and religion. A religious ceremony alone may not complete the civil registration needed for legal or immigration use.
A Nigerian applicant may need a passport and lawful-stay evidence, birth record, proof of being single or otherwise legally free to marry, and any final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate. The Egyptian office may also request age, religion, medical or embassy evidence. Obtain its written checklist before arranging Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, Egyptian Embassy legalization or Arabic translation.
Ask the Egyptian office that will register the marriage for its exact checklist before preparing documents. Complete the Nigerian authentication, embassy legalization and translation it requires, attend with the witnesses or interpreter specified, and obtain the official marriage record. A later spouse-residence application is a separate process.
Using Nigerian Documents in Egypt
Confirm the receiving office’s document list first. For documents requiring Egyptian consular legalization, complete Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs certification and any applicable category-specific checks before approaching the Egyptian mission. Ask separately about Arabic translation and any Egypt-side attestation.
Where an Egyptian procedure calls for consular legalization of a Nigerian public document, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry says it must first be certified by the foreign ministry in the issuing country. Extra checks can apply to certain academic or employment records.
Egypt’s mission legalizes foreign documents after issuing-country Foreign Ministry certification when consular legalization is required. The Egyptian receiving office decides which documents it needs and whether an additional Foreign Ministry stamp in Egypt is required.
An Arabic translation is not automatically part of Egyptian consular legalization. The court, civil-status office, immigration authority, university or other office using the document decides whether an English Nigerian record must be translated and what certification it accepts.
Birth certificate, single-status certificate, marriage certificate, WAEC certificate or degree and transcript, and police character certificate.
Asylum & Legal Stay in Egypt
UNHCR is the authority that registers and documents asylum seekers and refugees in Egypt. A person in Egypt begins by requesting a registration appointment through UNHCR's published channels. UNHCR records the person and family, issues the relevant asylum-seeker document and, where required, conducts refugee-status interviews. The applicant then approaches the Egyptian authorities for the residence permit linked to the UNHCR document.
Official Asylum & Legal Stay Source
UNHCR and its named partners provide registration, legal, protection and other support without charge. Keep the UNHCR card valid, update the office when the address or family circumstances change and use only the contact channels listed on the UNHCR Egypt site. A person facing detention or removal should contact UNHCR or a qualified Egyptian refugee lawyer promptly.
