Qatar for Nigerians
Qatar can offer Nigerian professionals tax-free salaries in energy, construction, healthcare, hospitality and education, alongside strong university and scholarship opportunities. It is mainly a sponsor-based work or study destination, not a route to permanent settlement, so the employer or institution, contract, accommodation and family terms should be checked carefully.

Study in Qatar
A Nigerian student first needs admission from a recognised Qatari university. The institution normally sponsors the student residence permit and tells the applicant which Ministry of Interior formalities must be completed. Qatar University and the Education City branch campuses offer English-taught programmes and competitive scholarships, but fees, scholarship conditions and sponsor arrangements differ considerably by institution.
Prepare the admission and scholarship or funding evidence, tuition arrangements, passport, medical and accommodation documents requested by the university. Confirm whether Nigerian academic certificates and transcripts must be authenticated and legalized before final registration; Qatar applies a particularly strict document chain to higher-education records.
Work in Qatar
Most Nigerian workers need a Qatari employer that will issue a written contract and arrange the work entry and residence process. The job, salary, occupation and employer shown in the official filing should match what was promised. Qatar has removed the general exit-permit rule and permits many workers to change employers, but a worker must still follow the formal Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Interior process rather than simply starting a new job.
The normal route is employer-sponsored residence and work authorisation. Specialist, senior and business categories may apply in defined cases, but there is no open visa for a Nigerian to enter Qatar and take any available job. Verify the employer, signed contract, recruitment channel and accommodation terms before travelling.
Permanent residency and citizenship in Qatar
Qatar offers only a very limited permanent residency. A capped number of permits go each year to a narrow group, such as long-term residents, people with a Qatari mother, and those with rare skills, and there is a separate property-linked residency. For most people, residence stays tied to a job or business and ends when that ends.
Citizenship is effectively closed to ordinary foreign residents, and Qatar does not allow dual citizenship, so you should not plan around becoming Qatari. Treat Qatar as a place to work and earn rather than to settle permanently.
Family Reunification in Qatar
Residents above an income threshold can sponsor a spouse and children for family residence. The sponsor's salary, housing and contract are assessed.
Spouse and children; sponsoring parents and other relatives is more restricted.
A resident sponsor who meets the minimum salary and housing requirements set by the Ministry of Interior.
A minimum monthly salary is required to sponsor family members; the threshold is set by the Ministry of Interior. Confirm the current figure.
Marriage and birth certificates, together with the sponsor's residence permit and salary evidence. Follow the checklist for the particular Qatari family application to determine which Nigerian records need embassy legalization or Arabic translation.
Marriage in Qatar
Marriages involving Muslim residents are generally handled through Qatar's Family Court, while a non-Muslim religious marriage may follow the procedure recognised for that community. The correct court or recognised authority depends on the parties' religion, nationality and residence status, so obtain its list before preparing Nigerian documents.
A Nigerian applicant may need a passport and Qatari residence record, birth and single-status evidence, medical results and any final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate. Obtain the competent court or authority's checklist before arranging Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, Qatar Embassy legalization or Arabic translation.
Confirm the competent court or religious authority, complete the required legalization and translation, and attend with any witnesses or guardian required for the case. Registering the marriage does not automatically transfer the Nigerian spouse onto family residence; that sponsorship application is completed separately.
Using Nigerian Documents in Qatar
Ask the Qatari receiving office what it needs. For an academic attestation, check the degree, transcript and approved seal chain. Confirm embassy or online submission, current fees and any additional Qatar MOFA step before paying.
Qatar MOFA says its attestation of foreign educational certificates requires issuing-country foreign-ministry or authorized-agency certification. Confirm the applicable prior checks for other document types.
The Qatar Embassy in Abuja lists attestation services. Qatar MOFA also provides an overseas online attestation route for eligible foreign-issued documents. Confirm which channel and seal chain apply to your case.
Arabic translation is separate from Nigerian authentication and Qatar Embassy legalization. The Qatari court, Ministry of Interior, university or other office using the document decides whether an English Nigerian record must be translated and what certification it accepts.
Document choice depends on the receiving authority. Qatar MOFA specifically requires a transcript with a foreign bachelor's degree for academic attestation. Civil, judicial and personal-status records have separate service categories.
Asylum & Legal Stay in Qatar
Qatar enacted a political-asylum law in 2018 and created a Refugee Committee within the Ministry of Interior. In December 2025, the Ministry and UNHCR agreed to develop the national procedure further. A person already in Qatar who needs protection should contact the Ministry of Interior and UNHCR for the current filing channel; this is not an ordinary visa that can be obtained from Nigeria.
Official Asylum & Legal Stay Source
Because the procedure is still developing and published applicant instructions are limited, keep Qatari residence status valid where possible and obtain advice directly from UNHCR or a qualified Qatari lawyer. UNHCR's Riyadh office also covers Qatar and accepts protection enquiries from people residing there.
