United Kingdom for Nigerians
The United Kingdom remains a leading destination for Nigerians because of its English-language universities, large Nigerian community, skilled employment and established routes to long-term residence. Tuition, rent and immigration costs are high, sponsored jobs are competitive and recent restrictions have made some work and dependant routes much less generous.

Study in the United Kingdom
Study runs on the Student visa, which needs a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed student sponsor, proof of funds and English ability. The Graduate visa lasts two years if the application is made on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if it is made from 1 January 2027. A PhD or other doctoral qualification still receives three years. Check the course, sponsor licence and current post-study rule before paying a deposit.
Tuition for the first year plus maintenance funds, currently about GBP 1,483 per month for up to nine months in London and GBP 1,136 per month outside London. Confirm current figures on gov.uk.
Work in the United Kingdom
The Skilled Worker route requires a job from a Home Office licensed sponsor, an eligible occupation, the required English level and pay that meets both the general threshold and the occupation's going rate. Health and Care Worker cases use the same sponsored structure with special rules for eligible jobs. Check the sponsor register, occupation code, hours and salary against the current rules before relying on an offer.
Routes include Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker for eligible health and care roles, Global Talent for recognized or emerging leaders and the Graduate visa for eligible UK graduates. The Graduate visa is temporary and unsponsored. It does not guarantee that an employer will later sponsor a Skilled Worker application.
Permanent residency and citizenship in United Kingdom
Settlement, called Indefinite Leave to Remain or ILR, is the permanent-residence stage. On the Skilled Worker route it currently comes after five years, and Health and Care Worker time counts the same way. One important caution: the government has proposed an earned settlement model that would lengthen the standard wait, with faster or slower timing tied to earnings and contribution. It is not law yet, but check the rule that applies when you reach your milestone rather than assuming five years.
British citizenship usually follows twelve months after you receive ILR, so roughly six years on the current five-year route, and sooner if you are married to a British citizen. The United Kingdom allows dual citizenship and Nigeria does too, so you keep your Nigerian passport. You sit the Life in the UK test and meet an English-language requirement.
Family Reunification in the United Kingdom
Partners and children of British citizens or settled people can apply on the family route. For a new partner application, the applicant and sponsor usually need combined income of at least GBP 29,000 a year. Different rules apply where the sponsor receives certain disability or carer benefits, and some people who first entered the route before 11 April 2024 remain under the earlier threshold. Genuine and continuing relationship evidence is required.
Spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner meeting the relationship rules, and dependent children.
Sponsor is usually a British citizen, settled person, or someone with eligible status. The applicant must meet relationship, financial and English requirements.
For a new partner application, the combined minimum income is usually GBP 29,000 a year. If the first partner application was made before 11 April 2024 and the person is extending with the same partner, the transitional threshold is generally GBP 18,600, with additional amounts for some children. Savings may be used in qualifying cases. Confirm the rule that applies to your own application on GOV.UK.
Marriage or partnership certificate, proof of a genuine and continuing relationship, financial evidence, and English language results. Nigerian documents are accepted with certified translations where needed.
Marriage in the United Kingdom
Civil marriages are registered by local register offices under the wider General Register Office system. A couple normally gives notice at the register office before the ceremony. Where either person is subject to immigration control, the case may be referred to the Home Office and the notice period can be extended.
The register office will ask for each person's passport, address and immigration-status evidence. A final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate is needed where relevant. Confirm whether a Nigerian civil document needs a certified translation or other verification before the notice appointment.
Book the notice appointment with the register office, attend with the required documents and wait for the notice period before the ceremony. A person coming only to marry and leave may need a Marriage Visitor visa. A person planning to remain with a British or settled partner needs the correct fiance, spouse or partner route instead. The marriage itself does not grant immigration status.
Using Nigerian Documents in the United Kingdom
Start with the specific UKVI or institutional checklist. Obtain genuine Nigerian records; use Ecctis only where an overseas degree is being used for an applicable English-language requirement. Do not buy embassy legalization for ordinary UK visa evidence.
Ordinary UK visa evidence does not routinely need Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. Follow the actual UKVI route or other UK recipient’s checklist before ordering authentication.
British embassies and high commissions do not legalize Nigerian documents. The UK Legalisation Office handles eligible UK-issued documents, not Nigerian originals. A separate UK institution may set its own certification or verification rule.
For a UK family visa, documents not in English or Welsh need a certified translation. Most Nigerian public records are already in English. Check the format required for the exact visa or other recipient.
Depends on route: birth and parental-consent evidence for a Student applicant under 18; relationship evidence for a dependant or family application; a degree and Ecctis assessment if an overseas degree is used to prove English.
Asylum & Legal Stay in the United Kingdom
A person claiming asylum at the UK border should tell a Border Force officer. A person already in the UK must call the asylum registration appointment line and attend a Home Office screening. The claim is not registered until the screening has taken place and the application has been accepted.
Official Asylum & Legal Stay Source
Screening records identity, fingerprints, family details and the basic reason the person cannot return. The Home Office may then send a questionnaire and arrange a substantive asylum interview. Keep the Home Office informed of any address change and meet every deadline. Legal aid may be available, and a qualified UK asylum solicitor can deal with evidence, an appeal or an urgent removal problem.
