How to Apply for Asylum in France as a Nigerian

Understand the first contact, registration, responsibility check, OFPRA file and personal interview under the procedure in force in 2026.

Official rules checked: 6 September 2026 | General information, not individual legal advice

Check whether you need international protection

France can grant refugee status or subsidiary protection when the applicable legal test is met. The question is whether you face persecution or a real risk of serious harm on return and whether effective protection is available to you.

Asylum is not a way to extend a visitor visa, repair an expired student permit or replace a work application. If the real issue is residence status, use the separate legal-stay guide. If the issue is danger on return, explain the complete true facts to a qualified adviser.

You cannot submit an OFPRA asylum application from Nigeria. OFPRA states that it examines applications lodged in France. A person abroad may ask the nearest French embassy or consulate about an asylum visa, but only the responsible minister decides whether such a visa is issued.

Use the current first-contact route for where you live

OFPRA’s current English guidance directs a person in France to a SPADA, a first reception structure for asylum seekers. In Paris and Ile-de-France, it directs applicants to contact OFII first on the telephone number shown on the official page. Outside Ile-de-France, it directs applicants to the SPADA for the department.

The SPADA records initial information and arranges an appointment with the registration service. Keep proof of the contact, the appointment notice and any written instruction. If you cannot gain access or do not understand where to go, ask a recognised asylum-support association or French lawyer for help.

Use the live instruction. France published new EU Pact information from 12 June 2026 while some OFPRA pages still describe the established SPADA and GUDA sequence. Follow the appointment letter and the current official page for your location.

Attend registration and explain vulnerability early

At registration, the authorities record identity, nationality, family details, contact information, travel history and earlier protection applications. They may take photographs and fingerprints and check the European responsibility rules. OFII assesses reception needs and vulnerability.

Give an address, phone number and email you can keep checking. Tell the officer about pregnancy, disability, serious illness, trauma, trafficking, sexual violence, domestic violence, interpretation needs or another vulnerability that may affect the procedure or reception support.

Do not destroy or hide an identity or travel document. If you have no passport, explain why. Keep the original registration paper and make clear copies of every page.

Explain visas, fingerprints, earlier applications and family links in Europe

France may need to decide whether it or another EU+ country is responsible for examining the application. Tell the authorities about any European visa or residence card, earlier entry, fingerprints, previous asylum request, and spouse, child or other relevant family member in another participating country.

Do not assume that you can choose the country by travelling onward. The current Asylum and Migration Management Regulation uses responsibility criteria and European records. Family links and dependency facts should be raised immediately with supporting documents where available.

Complete and send the OFPRA file within the live deadline

OFPRA’s current application page states that the completed and signed form must be sent to OFPRA within 21 days after the asylum application certificate is issued. It asks for the form, the required photograph, a copy of the certificate or valid residence permit, an account in French, travel documents and any procedure notice.

Check the actual form and current instructions you receive, because the national procedure is being adapted to the 2026 EU rules. Keep a complete copy of the submission and proof of delivery. If OFPRA says the file is incomplete, follow the stated completion deadline immediately.

The written account must be yours. Explain what happened, who was involved, why you fear return, why protection was not available and how the risk affects you personally. Do not buy a story, copy another applicant or submit a false document.

Prepare to give a complete and truthful account at OFPRA

OFPRA normally invites the applicant to an individual interview. The protection officer asks about the facts, the fear of return, available protection and the documents. The exchange is confidential and interpretation is provided in the language selected for the procedure.

Read your submitted account before the interview. Put dates, places, people and documents in a simple chronology. Separate what you personally experienced from what someone else told you. If you do not remember an exact date, say so and explain what you do remember.

Say immediately if the interpreter is not using the right language or dialect, if you cannot understand a question, or if a gender-sensitive arrangement is important. Attend on time. If a serious event prevents attendance, contact OFPRA at once through the stated channel and preserve evidence.

Organise genuine evidence without delaying the application

Useful material can include identity and family records, police or court papers, medical or psychological reports, employment or membership records, photographs, messages and witness information. Relevance and authenticity matter more than volume.

Keep originals, full message threads and the context in which each item was created. If obtaining a Nigerian document could expose you or another person to danger, speak to a protection lawyer before contacting anyone. Do not delay the application while waiting for Antarch Consulting to obtain or legalize a document.

Read the complete decision and identify the procedure

A positive decision states the protection granted and the next administrative steps. A refusal explains the reasons and how to appeal. The procedure heading is critical in 2026 because normal, accelerated, inadmissibility and border decisions do not all have the same CNDA deadline.

Send every page and proof of notification to a French asylum lawyer or qualified association immediately. Do not wait for a translation, a later letter or a document from Nigeria before protecting the deadline.

What to prepare now

Put your appointment notice, registration certificate, identity and travel papers, OFPRA form, written account, evidence, delivery receipt, interview notice and contact details in date order. Keep a separate note of every address change reported to an authority.

Antarch Consulting can help define a Nigerian document task after the legal deadline is protected. It cannot decide whether you qualify for protection or prepare a personal asylum story.
