South Korea for Nigerians

South Korea attracts Nigerians through the Global Korea Scholarship, strong engineering and technology universities, advanced manufacturing and selected skilled jobs. Korean language ability is important for most work and daily life, employer sponsorship can be demanding and permanent residence is difficult, so study should be chosen for its academic and career value rather than assumed settlement prospects.

Study in South Korea

Degree students normally use the D-2 visa, while Korean-language and some non-degree courses use D-4. The university issues the admission and visa-support documents. The Global Korea Scholarship and university awards are useful funding routes, but applicants should confirm the programme language, accreditation and whether the course leads to the post-study status they expect.

Funds requirement

Prepare the admission certificate, tuition payment or scholarship evidence, accommodation, passport and the bank balance required by the university and Korean mission. Ask whether Nigerian academic records need verification, legalization and Korean translation before final enrolment.

Work in South Korea

Skilled work uses the E-7 (designated activities) visa, which needs an employer and a relevant qualification or experience, among other E-category visas. Graduates of Korean universities can switch to a job-seeking (D-10) visa. There is no open low-skill route for most nationalities outside specific schemes. The E-2 visa used to teach English is not generally available to Nigerian citizens. It is limited to nationals of specified countries where English is treated as the first language, and Nigeria is not on that list even though English is an official language in Nigeria.

Routes available

E-7 skilled worker (employer-sponsored), other E-category visas by profession, D-10 job-seeker visa for graduates, and D-8 for investors.

Permanent residency and citizenship in South Korea

The F-5 permanent-resident visa is not an automatic reward for spending five years in Korea. Applicants must fit a defined F-5 category and meet its residence, income, conduct and Korean-language or social-integration conditions. Some skilled workers and graduates first move through an F-2 residence category, while spouse and investor cases follow different rules.

Citizenship

Citizenship is hard and slow. General naturalisation normally requires about five years of residence, together with Korean-language and integration requirements. South Korea generally does not allow a person who naturalizes to retain another citizenship, so a Nigerian applicant should confirm the effect on Nigerian citizenship before proceeding.

Family Reunification in South Korea

Holders of a long-stay visa can bring dependents on the F-3 visa, and the spouse of a Korean citizen uses the F-6 marriage visa. The sponsor must evidence status, the relationship, and means of support.

Eligible family members

Spouse and minor children (F-3 dependents); spouse of a Korean citizen (F-6).

Sponsor requirement

A holder of an eligible Korean residence visa (for F-3 dependents) or a Korean citizen (for the F-6 spouse visa), who can prove the relationship and support.

Income requirement

No single published threshold; the sponsor must show the ability to support dependents, and the F-6 marriage visa has a basic income guideline. Confirm with Hi Korea or the Korean Embassy.

Evidence needed

Marriage certificate and birth certificates, legalized through the Korean Embassy in Nigeria, plus the sponsor's visa or Korean identity document.

Marriage in South Korea

A marriage in South Korea is recorded by filing a marriage report at the competent local district, city or county office. The office checks whether the Korean and Nigerian partners are legally free to marry. If the marriage took place abroad, it may still need to be reported in Korea.

Documents required

A Nigerian applicant may need a passport, birth record and evidence of single status or legal capacity to marry, plus any final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate. Ask the registry and Korean mission which Nigerian records need Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, Korean Embassy legalization and certified Korean translation.

Process notes

Registering the marriage and obtaining an F-6 spouse visa are separate processes. The F-6 case can include proof that the relationship is genuine, the couple can communicate and the Korean sponsor meets the housing and income rules. Obtain the current embassy checklist before preparing the visa file or paying for translations.

Using Nigerian Documents in South Korea

Ask the Korean school or authority which document it needs and whether it requires legalization. For Abuja Embassy certificate or transcript legalization, use one form per document and follow its published academic, appointment and representative requirements. Translation depends on the receiving authority.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication

For a document submitted to the Korean Embassy in Abuja for legalization, follow the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Advanced Consular Services online process and its physical-vetting appointment. For educational certificates and transcripts, the Embassy also asks for a Ministry of Education signature and an original school letter. Do not apply that academic checklist to unrelated records.

Embassy legalization

The Korean Embassy in Abuja provides certificate and transcript legalization by appointment after Nigerian authentication. The Korean school or authority receiving the document decides whether that service is needed for the particular application.

Translation requirement

Translation requirements depend on the document and its purpose. Ask the Korean authority handling the matter whether it requires a certified Korean or English translation and what form of certification it accepts.

Affected document types

Birth certificate, single-status certificate, marriage certificate, WAEC certificate or degree and transcript, and police character certificate, depending on the purpose for which the document will be used.

Asylum & Legal Stay in South Korea

A person in South Korea can apply for refugee recognition at an immigration office or at the port of entry. The Korea Immigration Service records the application, interviews the applicant and decides whether refugee status or humanitarian stay applies. The process is separate from an ordinary Korean visa and cannot be completed from Nigeria.

Legal aid / support

Recognition rates are low, so obtain help from a Korean lawyer or an experienced refugee-support organisation early, not only after a refusal. Submit identity records and available evidence, attend the interview and keep the immigration office informed of the current address. A negative decision can be challenged, but the stated filing deadline matters.

A pending refugee case does not erase an earlier overstay or guarantee permission to work. Where the problem concerns an employer, unpaid salary, visa expiry or family status rather than fear of serious harm on return, use the labour or immigration process that fits that problem.
Rules and document requirements can change. Confirm with the relevant authority before you submit documents or pay anyone.
