Study in Paraguay

A Nigerian student first needs admission to a Paraguayan university or other recognised institution, then the residence status that covers the period of study. Most courses are taught in Spanish. Ask the institution whether Nigerian secondary or degree records need legalization, Spanish translation or local recognition before enrolment, and confirm the residence application with Paraguay's National Directorate of Migration.

Prepare the admission letter, tuition or registration evidence, passport, police and civil records requested for residence, proof of address and evidence that living costs can be met. The institution and Migration Directorate should confirm the current amount and the form of financial evidence they will accept.

Work in Paraguay

There is no general Paraguayan work visa that can be obtained without a real basis for residence. A Nigerian normally needs a job, business, family connection or another lawful residence category, and must obtain the Paraguayan identity and tax records needed for formal employment. Ask the employer to put the job, salary and residence support in writing before travelling or paying anyone.

The realistic routes are employment supported by temporary residence, an independently qualifying business or investment route, and family residence with work rights where the category permits it. A company registration or offer letter does not by itself give a foreigner permission to live and work in Paraguay.

Permanent residency and citizenship in Paraguay

Paraguay used to be famous for a fast, cheap residence deposit, but the rules have changed. The ordinary route now means two years of temporary residence, with a job or business in Paraguay, before you move to permanent residence. There is also a higher investment route that grants permanent residence directly, but from around USD 70,000 upward, so the old bargain no longer applies.

Citizenship generally needs about three years of permanent residence, plus basic Spanish or Guarani, a civics test and genuine ties to the country. Paraguay formally recognizes dual citizenship only with countries that offer Paraguayans the same right, currently Spain. A Nigerian applicant should obtain current legal advice on whether naturalization would affect Nigerian citizenship before proceeding. Treat the dual-citizenship position as unsettled and confirm it.

Family Reunification in Paraguay

Citizens and residents can sponsor a spouse and children for family residence. The relationship and the sponsor's residence are assessed.

Marriage in Paraguay

A civil marriage is recorded by Paraguay's Civil Registry, called the Registro del Estado Civil. The registry office where the ceremony or registration will take place should give the Nigerian applicant its current foreign-national checklist.

Expect a passport, birth certificate, evidence that the applicant is single and legally free to marry, and any final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate. Nigerian documents may need Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, Paraguayan consular legalization and a certified Spanish translation.

Obtain the registry's list before sending original documents abroad, complete the required legalization and translation, and then file the marriage papers with the Civil Registry. Marriage registration is separate from the Nigerian spouse's residence application.

Using Nigerian Documents in Paraguay

First complete any verification or notarization required for the document, followed by Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. Then follow the instructions from the Paraguayan authority or the embassy it identifies. A certified Spanish translation may be required.

Nigerian documents must be notarized where required, then authenticated by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Paraguay has no embassy in Nigeria. After Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, ask the Paraguayan authority or visa centre which embassy handles Nigerian documents and whether embassy legalization is required. Confirm this before sending original documents.

A Spanish translation is not automatically part of authentication or consular legalization. Paraguay's migration authority, Civil Registry, university or other receiving office decides whether an English Nigerian document must be translated and which translator it accepts. Follow the checklist for the particular procedure.

Asylum & Legal Stay in Paraguay

A person in Paraguay can request refugee protection orally or in writing from the Executive Secretariat of the National Refugee Commission, known as CONARE. The request can also be made to officials at a Paraguayan land border, port or airport, who must refer it to CONARE. It is not a visa application that can be filed from Nigeria.

A refusal or removal notice should be reviewed by a qualified Paraguayan lawyer before the appeal period expires.
