Routes depend on your qualification and points. The Opportunity Card uses a points system (qualification, experience, language, age, ties). The EU Blue Card needs a recognised degree and a qualifying salary. Check recognition of your qualification first.

Step-by-step preparation

- Get your qualification recognised where required.
- Apply for the Opportunity Card, or with a job offer the relevant work visa, online through the Consular Services Portal of the Federal Foreign Office, and attend the visa appointment in person at the German Consulate General in Lagos. The German Embassy in Abuja takes visa applications only in the short list of cases published on the official Federal Foreign Office website for Nigeria.
- After arrival, register and, for the Opportunity Card, find qualifying work.

Document requirements
Recognised qualification or proof of vocational training, CV, proof of funds for the job-seeking phase, and health insurance. Language evidence where relevant.
Nigerian-specific issues
Degrees and certificates usually need recognition. There is no German embassy legalization for Nigerian documents. Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication in Nigeria may sometimes be required, depending on the document and on the German authority you apply to, so the written checklist from that authority decides which Nigerian documents need authentication or verification, and any verification is started only by a German authority or by the German Consulate General in Lagos. Use genuine NPC and Federal records.
