Study in Australia

Study runs on the Student visa, subclass 500. The applicant needs a Confirmation of Enrolment for a course listed on CRICOS, must satisfy the Genuine Student requirement and normally provides English, health, insurance and financial evidence. Post-study work may be available after an eligible qualification, but the length and conditions depend on the qualification and rules in force at graduation. Check the course and provider before paying. On 17 September 2026, Australia announced plans to restrict family members on Student and Temporary Graduate visas. Exceptions were mentioned for Pacific and ASEAN nationals and certain courses, such as PhDs. No start date or final details have been confirmed. Current Australian government guidance still describes family applications under the Student visa. If you plan to bring a partner or child, check the rule in force before you apply.

Home Affairs sets a minimum financial-capacity amount for the student and additional amounts for accompanying family members. Tuition and travel must also be covered. Use the current Home Affairs figure when applying rather than an amount copied from an old admission blog, and make sure the money or sponsor evidence is genuinely available and can be traced.

Work in Australia

Australia has both points-tested skilled migration and employer-sponsored work routes. Points-tested applicants submit an expression of interest through SkillSelect and may need state or regional nomination. Employer-sponsored applicants need an approved employer and a role that meets the occupation, experience, salary and English rules. Most professional and trade cases also require a positive skills assessment from the authority responsible for the occupation.

The main skilled options include Skilled Independent subclass 189, Skilled Nominated subclass 190 and Skilled Work Regional subclass 491. Employer routes include the Skills in Demand visa and other sponsored or regional categories. Being on an occupation list does not guarantee an invitation or job; check the exact visa, assessing authority and state criteria that apply to the occupation.

Permanent residency and citizenship in Australia

Permanent residence may be available through points-tested visas such as Skilled Independent subclass 189 and Skilled Nominated subclass 190, as well as employer-sponsored routes. The Skilled Work Regional subclass 491 visa is provisional and may lead to permanent residence through subclass 191 after the required period. Although 65 is the minimum points threshold for points-tested visas, competitive occupations often require a higher score.

Citizenship generally needs four years of lawful residence with at least the final twelve months held as a permanent resident, plus a citizenship test. Australia allows dual citizenship and Nigeria does too, so you keep your Nigerian passport.

Family Reunification in Australia

Partners, children and some other relatives of Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens can apply. Partner visas are processed in stages and check the genuineness of the relationship.

Marriages are conducted by an authorized marriage celebrant and registered with the state or territory Births, Deaths and Marriages office.

Valid passport, birth certificate, and a divorce decree or death certificate if previously married. A Notice of Intended Marriage must be given at least one month before the ceremony.

Lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage with an authorized celebrant, wait the required period, then marry. Marrying does not by itself grant a visa, and a partner visa is a separate application.
