Nigerian Document Legalization for Croatia
Croatia requires full legalization for Nigerian public documents. Croatia has no resident embassy in Nigeria, and VFS Abuja handles visas rather than document legalization. Croatia’s published guidance for Nigerian documents requires Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication first. The Nigerian High Commission in London must then verify the Nigerian seal before the document is submitted at a booked appointment with the Croatian Embassy in London.
What Croatia actually requires
Full legalization. Nigeria is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. A Nigerian document cannot receive a Nigerian apostille, so Croatia’s full legalization process applies when the Croatian authority requires a legalized foreign public document.
Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. Complete any verification or notarization required for the document, then obtain authentication from the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
London embassy procedure. Croatia’s published guidance says the Nigerian High Commission in London must verify the Nigerian stamp and signature before the Croatian Embassy in London can legalize the High Commission’s stamp.
Appointment required. Book the Croatian Embassy appointment through the Croatian Consular Portal. The embassy requires in-person submission and does not accept full-legalization applications by post.
Translation. Many Croatian authorities require a certified Croatian translation. Confirm the language rule with the office receiving the document, because some procedures accept documents in English.
Which Nigerian documents this affects
Common examples include NPC birth certificates, marriage certificates, single-status or no-impediment evidence, divorce and death records, and police character certificates. WAEC or NECO records, degrees and transcripts, professional qualifications, powers of attorney, affidavits and commercial documents may also require legalization. The Croatian authority receiving the document decides which items need legalization and how recently they must have been issued.

Confirm the Croatian checklist
Ask the school, registry office, employer, court, police office, immigration office or other authority exactly which Nigerian documents it needs. Confirm acceptable issue dates, whether originals or certified copies are required, and whether a Croatian translation is needed.
Obtain the correct Nigerian documents
Use the appropriate issuing authority. Complete any document-specific check before Ministry authentication. Academic records may need education-authority verification, while an affidavit, certified copy or power of attorney may need notarization.
Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Submit the prepared documents for Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication in Nigeria. Keep clear scans of the documents and stamps submitted, together with the receipts and the checklist supplied by the Croatian authority.
Complete the Nigerian High Commission step in London
Croatia’s official guidance says the Nigerian High Commission in London must verify the Nigerian stamp and signature. Confirm the High Commission’s current submission, fee, identification and collection requirements before sending any original.
Book and attend the Croatian Embassy appointment
Book through the Croatian Consular Portal. The Croatian Embassy in London requires the original document to be delivered in person after the Nigerian High Commission step and does not accept the legalization application by post. The official guidance allows another person to deliver the document, which may help an applicant who does not live in the United Kingdom. The representative should confirm the identification or authorisation required for the appointment.
Complete the translation and submit in Croatia
Arrange a certified Croatian translation if the receiving authority requires one. If the translation must reproduce the legalization stamps, arrange it only after all authentication and embassy legalization stamps have been added. Submit the document and translation to the Croatian authority for the purpose it was prepared for.
Timelines and planning
The London stages and the Croatian Embassy appointment will usually require the most planning. Book before sending original documents abroad, and allow time for secure delivery, the Nigerian High Commission step, the embassy appointment, return delivery and translation. As of July 2026, the Croatian Embassy’s published fee for this London legalization step is GBP 13.13 per document, payable by card. Confirm the fee and every submission requirement before the appointment. Police, single-status and other time-sensitive records should be obtained only after the Croatian authority confirms how recent they must be.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Taking documents to VFS Abuja for legalization. VFS accepts Croatian visa applications in Nigeria, but it does not handle this document legalization procedure.
- Stopping after Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication when the Croatian authority also requires verification by the Nigerian High Commission and legalization by the Croatian Embassy in London.
- Sending a document to the Croatian Embassy in London before the Nigerian High Commission in London has verified the Nigerian stamp and signature.
- Sending originals to the Croatian Embassy by post or travelling without an appointment booked through the Consular Portal.
- Paying for a translation before checking whether Croatian is required and whether every legalization stamp must appear in the translated version.
- Treating legalization as academic recognition, professional licensing, admission, residence approval or proof that the document’s contents are correct.
