Nigerian Document Legalization for Tunisia
Tunisia is an apostille country, but Nigerian documents cannot be apostilled in Nigeria. For a Nigerian document intended for use in Tunisia, obtain the correct original and complete Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. Then ask the Tunisian Embassy in Abuja and the Tunisian authority receiving the document whether embassy legalization and an Arabic or French translation are also required.
What Tunisia actually requires
Tunisia is a Hague Apostille Convention party, but that helps only where the document is issued by a contracting state. Nigeria is not a party, so Nigerian-issued documents cannot receive a Nigerian apostille.
Tunisia’s official mission list identifies the Embassy of the Republic of Tunisia in Abuja. Tunisian embassy consular material abroad includes document legalization and authentication services, but Abuja’s public checklist for Nigerian documents is not detailed enough to skip direct confirmation.
When a Tunisian authority requires legalization, first obtain the document from the appropriate Nigerian authority. Complete any required notarization or earlier verification, then obtain Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. The Tunisian mission or receiving authority should then confirm whether it wants consular legalization, authentication of signature, translation or direct submission.
Translation. Arabic or French translation may be required depending on the Tunisian authority and document purpose. Confirm the accepted translator and whether the translation itself needs authentication.

The records most often prepared for Tunisia are birth certificate, marriage certificate, single-status affidavit or certificate, police character certificate, academic certificates and transcripts, powers of attorney, signature documents, and commercial documents.
Step by step, from Nigeria
Obtain the correct Nigerian document
Start with the document issued by the appropriate Nigerian authority. This may be an NPC birth certificate, a Federal Marriage Registry marriage certificate, a sworn single-status document, a Police Character Certificate, or an academic certificate and transcript. Check whether the document needs verification or notarization before the next step.
Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Notarize or pre-certify where required, then authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. Keep copies and any supporting affidavit or school letter that explains the document.
Confirm the Tunisian Embassy or recipient step
Contact the Tunisian Embassy in Abuja and the Tunisian receiving authority before paying. Confirm whether they require consular legalization, signature authentication, a specimen-signature form, fees, appointment, copies or a specific collection day.
Add the accepted Arabic or French translation
Translate only after the recipient confirms the target language and certification format. Some legal and civil documents may need translation accepted by the Tunisian authority, not merely a generic translation.
Timelines and planning
Allow time for the Tunisian Embassy or receiving authority to confirm the requirements. Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication comes first, but the more unpredictable parts are mission confirmation, signature or document screening, accepted translation format, fee payment and collection timing. Confirm the current checklist before you pay an agent, translator or courier.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming Tunisia’s apostille status means Nigerian documents need no Nigerian authentication. Nigerian documents cannot be apostilled because Nigeria is not in the convention.
- Using old embassy contact details or generic directories without confirming the current Abuja mission process directly.
- Going to the Tunisian Embassy before Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication or without the copies, ID, signature form, fee evidence or envelope the mission may ask for.
- Submitting an Arabic or French translation that the Tunisian authority has not agreed to accept.
