Document Legalization
Nigerian Document Legalization for Algeria
Algeria’s Apostille Convention entry into force is 9 July 2026, but Nigerian documents cannot be apostilled in Nigeria because Nigeria is not a Hague Apostille Convention party. For Nigerian documents requested by an Algerian authority, start with the correct Nigerian original and Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, then confirm Algerian consular legalization and translation requirements with the Embassy of Algeria in Abuja.
What Algeria actually requires
Nigeria is not a Hague Apostille Convention party, so a Nigerian public document cannot receive a Nigerian apostille. Algeria’s entry into the Apostille Convention on 9 July 2026 does not allow Nigerian-issued documents to receive a Nigerian apostille. Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication may still be required.
Algerian consular guidance for foreign documents treats documents for use in Algeria as documents that must first be authenticated or apostilled according to the country of origin before Algerian consular processing. For Nigerian documents, that means Nigerian source correction or notarization where required, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, then Algerian consular legalization where the Algerian receiving authority asks for it.
Confirm the Abuja mission’s current legalization counter process before you go: appointment rules, copies, fee, collection day, and whether your exact document type is accepted at the embassy.
Translation. French or Arabic translation may be required depending on the Algerian recipient and document type. Confirm the language and whether translation must be certified before or after consular legalization.
Which Nigerian documents this affects
The records most often prepared for Algeria are birth certificate, marriage certificate, single-status affidavit or certificate, police character certificate, WAEC certificate or degree and transcript, powers of attorney, and commercial documents.
Step by step, from Nigeria
Obtain the correct Nigerian document
Start with the document issued by the appropriate Nigerian authority. This may be an NPC birth certificate, a Federal Marriage Registry marriage certificate, a sworn single-status document, a Police Character Certificate, or an academic certificate and transcript. Check whether the document needs verification or notarization before the next step.
Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Notarize or pre-certify the document where the document type requires it, then authenticate it at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. Academic records may need school or education-sector confirmation before Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication.
Confirm and legalize through the Embassy of Algeria in Abuja
Before attending, confirm the embassy’s current document-legalization process, fee, appointment window, required copies and collection timing. Submit only documents that already carry the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication.
Add the accepted translation
If the Algerian recipient asks for French or Arabic, use a certified translator acceptable to that recipient and confirm whether the translation itself must also be legalized.
Timelines and planning
Allow time for the Algerian Embassy or receiving authority to review the documents after Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication comes first, but appointment availability, fee confirmation, document screening, translation acceptance and collection days at the Algerian side are more likely to control the final timeline. Confirm fees and timing before you pay, translate or courier documents.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming Algeria’s Apostille Convention status allows a Nigerian-issued document to receive an apostille in Nigeria. It does not; Nigerian-issued documents still need Nigerian authentication because Nigeria is not in the convention.
- Going to the Algerian Embassy before Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. A consular legalization request normally starts only after the document has the origin-country authentication.
- Translating too early or into the wrong language. Algerian recipients may ask for French, Arabic or a specific certification format.
- Relying on a generic agent checklist instead of written confirmation from the Algerian recipient or the Embassy of Algeria in Abuja.
