Document Legalization

Nigerian Document Legalization for Iceland

For an Icelandic spouse residence permit, a Nigerian marriage or marital-status certificate normally needs chain authentication. A police certificate is different: the usual copy does not need legalization unless Iceland’s Directorate of Immigration asks for it. English-language Nigerian records normally need no translation for this application.

What Iceland actually requires

Iceland’s Directorate of Immigration sets document rules by permit type. Its spouse-permit checklist calls for an original or certified copy of a legally authenticated marriage certificate. For cohabitation, it requires marital-status certificates; these may not be older than six months when submitted.

Because Nigeria cannot issue an apostille, the Directorate describes chain authentication for originals from non-apostille countries: the issuing country’s foreign ministry authenticates the document, followed by the Icelandic embassy competent for that country. The official checklist does not identify an Icelandic mission accepting Nigerian originals. Confirm the competent mission with the Directorate or Iceland’s foreign ministry before sending an original.

The same spouse checklist expressly says an ordinary copy of the criminal-record certificate does not need legal authentication. It must be issued by the competent authority in the applicant’s country of residence and be less than 12 months old when submitted. The Directorate may request a legally authenticated original if necessary. Do not pay for police-certificate legalization automatically.

Which Nigerian documents this affects

For marriage-based spouse residence, the key Nigerian civil document is the marriage certificate. For cohabitation-based residence, check the required marital-status evidence and its six-month age limit. Other family applications may call for birth or relationship documents under their own checklists.

A Nigerian police certificate can be required for a residence application, but the spouse checklist gives it a different authentication rule. Academic records for study or work should be checked against the relevant permit or institution, rather than added to a spouse document package.

Step by step, from Nigeria

Identify the Icelandic application

Read the specific Directorate checklist. A spouse permit, another family permit, study, work and civil registration need not ask for the same Nigerian records.

Prepare the marriage or status record

For a spouse application, obtain the original marriage certificate or the marital-status evidence requested for cohabitation. Correct discrepancies and check the six-month limit if a marital-status certificate is required.

Authenticate civil originals when required

For a non-apostille Nigerian original subject to chain authentication, follow the Directorate’s stated order: authentication by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then confirmation by the Icelandic embassy competent for the issuing country. Verify which mission accepts Nigerian records before dispatch.

Handle the police certificate separately

For the ordinary spouse application, submit the copy required by the checklist without automatic legalization. Ensure it is from the appropriate country of residence and under 12 months old. Authenticate an original only if the Directorate requests one.

Check language and copy format

For this Directorate process, documents in English or a Nordic language do not need translation. If a document is in another language, use a certified translation into Icelandic, English or a Nordic language; a translation made outside Iceland may itself need legal authentication.

Timelines and planning

A certified copy is made from a legally authenticated original where the Directorate requires authentication. Do not certify an unauthenticated copy first and assume it replaces the original chain.

Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid

  • Legalizing every police certificate even though the ordinary spouse checklist says its copy does not need legal authentication.
  • Using a marital-status certificate older than six months for a cohabitation application, or a police certificate older than 12 months.
  • Assuming any Icelandic visa-handling centre is also the mission competent to authenticate Nigerian civil documents.

Verify with official sources

Check the current instructions for your document and purpose before paying or sending an original.
