Nigerian Document Legalization for Hungary
For a Hungarian family application, a Nigerian birth or marriage certificate may need diplomatic authentication. Study applicants have a different document list. Check your application type before paying to legalize a document.
What Hungary actually requires
The Embassy of Hungary in Abuja authenticates original documents issued by Nigerian authorities after the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has authenticated them. First check whether the Hungarian office handling your application actually needs that service for your document.
For a family-reunification residence application, the Embassy specifically lists birth and marriage certificates with diplomatic authentication. Its study-permit list asks for original diplomas and school certificates, including WAEC or NECO, but does not say that every school record must receive embassy legalization. A university may set separate admission or qualification checks.
Translation depends on the Hungarian procedure. For Hungarian civil registration, an English, German or French civil certificate generally needs no translation unless it is handwritten or contains a comment. Where a Hungarian translation is required, confirm whether OFFI or consular translation authentication is needed.
Which Nigerian documents this affects
The document depends on the purpose. Birth and marriage certificates matter in family cases. Hungarian civil registration may call for a child’s birth certificate or a marriage certificate. Study applications ask for original diplomas and school certificates, including WAEC or NECO. Do not treat a police certificate, single-status document or transcript as a mandatory legalization item in every case.
Family, civil registration and study
Joining family in Hungary. The Embassy’s family-reunification checklist asks for a birth or marriage certificate with diplomatic authentication. A marriage certificate submitted by a family member of a Hungarian citizen has an extra condition: the marriage must first be registered in Hungary. Check the current residence category before collecting documents, since not every sponsor’s permit allows family reunification.
Registering a birth or marriage. The Embassy accepts original Nigerian civil records authenticated by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then authenticates them for the registration case. It says originals filed for Hungarian registration are archived and not returned. Ask the consular section which originals it will retain before surrendering an irreplaceable record.
Studying in Hungary. The Embassy lists original diplomas and school certificates, including WAEC or NECO, for a study residence application. That is different from saying that all academic records need diplomatic authentication. Confirm any extra certification with the university or immigration authority. School admission and recognition of a qualification are separate decisions.
Step by step, from Nigeria
Obtain the correct Nigerian document
Use the original record named in the Hungarian application checklist. For a family case that may be a Nigerian birth or marriage certificate. For study it may be a degree, diploma, WAEC or NECO certificate. Ask the receiving authority before adding a sworn statement or police certificate that its checklist has not requested.
Authenticate at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
For an original Nigerian record that will receive Hungarian diplomatic authentication, first apply through the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Advanced Consular Services portal. Follow its physical-vetting appointment instructions. Do not assume that every degree needs a Federal Ministry of Education step or that every civil record needs notarization.
Legalize at the Embassy of Hungary, Abuja
Book a Legalization appointment through Konzinfo, select Abuja and make the booking in the applicant’s name even if a representative will attend. Book separately for each applicant and case type.
A representative may submit and collect. Bring the original authorization listing the documents, requested procedure, applicant and representative details, and validity period. It must be signed by the applicant and two witnesses. Include a copy of the applicant’s passport or ID, and the representative must present an original passport or ID.
Confirm the translation requirement
For Hungarian birth or marriage registration, the Embassy says English, German and French certificates generally need no translation unless handwritten or containing a comment. A non-Hungarian spouse’s certificate of prior marital status has a separate Hungarian-translation rule. Ask which rule covers your document rather than translating every English certificate.
Timelines and planning
The Embassy’s fee schedule effective 1 August 2026 lists NGN 39,900 for diplomatic authentication. The consular section issues a deposit slip after submission for payment at Zenith Bank’s Maitama Main Branch. Check the current amount and payment deadline on your slip before paying.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Expecting a Nigerian apostille. Nigeria cannot issue a Hague Apostille. Where embassy legalization is required, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication must be completed first.
- Going to the Embassy of Hungary, Abuja before Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication. The Embassy accepts documents for legalization only after that authentication is complete.
- Paying for a Hungarian translation of an English birth or marriage certificate without checking the relevant registration rule. Some English civil certificates need no translation, while a marital-status certificate has a different rule.

Requirements change. Always confirm the current procedure directly before you start the process or submit documents.
