What Switzerland actually requires

Obtain the document from the appropriate Nigerian authority and complete any verification, certification or notarization required for that type of document. If the Swiss receiving authority requires legalization, ask the Embassy which Nigerian certification it will accept before the Swiss stage.

The Swiss Embassy in Abuja reviews legalization requests individually. It can confirm an official signature or seal, but that does not verify the facts in the document. Ask the Swiss recipient and the Embassy whether legalization is needed and which Nigerian certification should precede it.

Translation. Ask the Swiss canton, civil registry, university, court or other receiving authority whether it accepts English or requires a certified German, French or Italian translation, and when that translation should be completed.

For a marriage to be performed in Switzerland, the Swiss Embassy says the original civil-status documents submitted for the preparatory procedure must be less than six months old, are not returned and may undergo additional verification at the applicant’s expense. Registration of a marriage performed in Nigeria has a separate checklist with the same original-document and six-month rules. These are civil-status requirements, not a rule for every study or work application.

The Embassy’s general legalization page does not give a current Nigeria-specific fee or turnaround. Ask for the applicable amount, payment method, processing time and collection arrangement when you book. Civil-status document verification can add time and cost.

Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid

• Expecting a Nigerian apostille. Nigeria cannot issue a Hague Apostille. Where Swiss Embassy legalization is required, ask which Nigerian certification must come first.
• Assuming that a Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stamp alone will satisfy the Swiss recipient, or that every Swiss application needs a Swiss Embassy stamp. Confirm the route for your particular document.
• Skipping or mistiming the translation. Do it in the form and language the receiving authority specifies, at the right stage.
