Nigerian Document Legalization for the United States
For ordinary U.S. immigration, the right Nigerian record and the U.S. application checklist matter more than embassy stamps. Immigrant-visa applicants in Lagos also need to prepare original civil documents for a separate in-person document review before the interview.
What the United States actually requires
For USCIS and visa applications you generally do not need Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication or embassy legalization. Provide the format required by the USCIS form or consular checklist. USCIS instructions commonly accept legible copies unless an original is requested, while immigrant-visa interviews require the specified originals or certified copies.
No U.S. embassy legalization step for ordinary immigration applications. The United States is a party to the Apostille Convention, but Nigeria is not, so an apostille is not available for Nigerian documents; this does not affect normal USCIS filings.
Translation. Any document not in English needs a certified English translation. As most Nigerian documents are already in English, translation is rarely needed.

For U.S. applications, commonly requested Nigerian records include birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, Police Character Certificates, degrees and transcripts. The exact list depends on the application type.

Obtain the correct Nigerian document
Start with the document named by your U.S. form or consular checklist. For an immigrant visa, compare Nigerian civil records with the U.S. State Department’s Nigeria reciprocity schedule. It identifies the issuing authorities and acceptable formats for birth, marriage, divorce and police records. An affidavit or school transcript is not a substitute for a required civil record unless the applicable checklist permits it.
Translate only what is not in English
Most Nigerian documents are already in English and need no translation. Provide a certified English translation only for any document that is not in English.
Follow the checklist for your U.S. application
Use the document list for your specific visa or form, as study, work and family applications have different requirements. Legalization is generally not required for immigration; for a Nigerian document used by a United States state or non-immigration body, confirm separately whether it wants authentication.
For immigrant-visa cases processed in Lagos, the Consulate requires an in-person document review before the visa interview. Bring the original documents to both visits and upload copies to CEAC as instructed. Its checklist requires a certified English translation only for a document that is not in English. This Lagos procedure should not be applied to all U.S. student or visitor visas.
The U.S. Nigeria reciprocity schedule names the Police Character Certificate, accepts both its older red format and newer blue format, and gives a two-year validity period for immigrant-visa use. Check the current schedule and your interview date before requesting one.
Timelines and planning
Most immigration filings need no legalization, so your timing is driven by the application itself, not an embassy queue. Fees and checklists change, so confirm the current requirements before paying or submitting an application.
Common Legalization Mistakes to Avoid
- Expecting a Nigerian apostille. Nigeria cannot issue one. Obtain Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication only where the relevant U.S. authority or other receiver expressly requires it.
- Paying for legalization you do not need. For ordinary United States immigration, certified English documents are assessed directly.
- Submitting an incomplete set. Match the exact checklist for your form, and include every annex a document refers to.
