Saudi Arabia for Nigerians
Saudi Arabia can attract Nigerians through university scholarships, Islamic studies and tax-free skilled employment in healthcare, engineering, education and major development projects. Residence is usually tied to a sponsor and does not provide a normal path to permanent settlement or citizenship, so applicants should examine the employer, contract and family conditions carefully.

Study in Saudi Arabia
Study begins with admission from a Saudi university that can sponsor the student visa and residence permit, commonly called an iqama. Government and university scholarships may cover tuition, housing, medical care and a stipend, while self-funded programmes require a clear budget. Confirm the teaching language and programme accreditation; many courses are in Arabic, although English is used in several science and professional programmes.
A scholarship applicant uses the award and university sponsorship evidence. A self-funded student should prepare tuition, accommodation and living-cost evidence in the form required by the university and visa process. Ask whether Nigerian academic records must first be verified, authenticated, legalized and translated into Arabic.
Work in Saudi Arabia
A Nigerian worker needs a Saudi employer that will issue the employment contract and arrange the work visa, Qiwa contract and residence permit. The occupation on the visa and iqama should match the actual job, and regulated professions need the relevant Saudi classification or licence. Check the employer, salary, housing, medical cover and recruitment channel before travelling or handing over original documents.
The ordinary route is employer-sponsored work and residence. Premium Residency and investor or business categories are separate options for applicants who independently meet their high financial or professional conditions; they are not substitutes for an ordinary job offer.
Permanent residency and citizenship in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has a paid Premium Residency, sometimes called the Saudi green card, which lets you live, work and own a business without a local sponsor. It comes in renewable yearly and permanent contribution-based forms, with costs running from tens of thousands of dollars upward, so it is aimed at investors and high earners rather than ordinary workers. Standard work residence stays tied to an employer.
Premium Residency does not lead to citizenship, which is granted only in exceptional cases with royal approval, and Saudi Arabia does not generally allow dual citizenship. Plan on Saudi Arabia as a place to work and invest rather than to naturalise.
Family Reunification in Saudi Arabia
Residents above an income threshold and in eligible professions can sponsor a spouse and children for family residence. The sponsor's profession, salary and housing are assessed.
Spouse and children; sponsoring parents is more restricted and profession-dependent.
A resident sponsor who meets the salary, profession and housing requirements set by the authorities.
A minimum salary and an eligible profession are required to sponsor family; thresholds are set by the authorities. Confirm the current rules.
Marriage and birth certificates, together with the sponsor's iqama and salary evidence. Follow the checklist for the particular Saudi family application to determine which Nigerian records need embassy legalization or Arabic translation.
Marriage in Saudi Arabia
A marriage involving foreign residents is normally handled through the competent Saudi court and Ministry of Justice process. Additional official approval can apply where one party is a Saudi citizen. Obtain the exact list for the parties' nationalities, religions and residence status before preparing Nigerian records.
A Nigerian applicant may need a passport and iqama, birth and single-status records, medical results and any final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate. Obtain the competent court's checklist before arranging Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, Saudi Embassy legalization or Arabic translation.
Confirm the competent court and any prior approval, complete the legalization and translation, and attend with the witnesses or guardian required for the case. Marriage does not itself give the Nigerian spouse family residence or permission to work; the sponsor must complete those immigration steps separately.
Using Nigerian Documents in Saudi Arabia
Get the receiving authority's list first. If consular attestation is required, verify the Nigerian certification chain, the Saudi Embassy's current submission and payment instructions, and whether later Saudi MOFA ratification applies. Do not rely on an old case fee or turnaround as a current embassy schedule.
Nigerian MFA authentication may be part of a Saudi consular attestation chain, but first confirm that the Saudi authority receiving this particular document requires it and ask the Saudi Embassy which prior certifications it accepts.
Not a blanket requirement. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides a document-ratification service covering educational, commercial and personal-status records. Ask the Saudi receiving authority and the Embassy in Abuja whether consular attestation and a further Saudi MOFA step apply to your document.
Arabic translation is separate from Nigerian authentication and Saudi Embassy legalization. The Saudi court, immigration authority, university or other office using the document decides whether an English Nigerian record must be translated and what certification it accepts.
Birth certificate, single-status certificate, marriage certificate, degree and transcript, and police character certificate.
Asylum & Legal Stay in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia does not operate a general domestic refugee-status procedure. A person already residing in Saudi Arabia who fears return can contact the UNHCR office in Riyadh, which reviews protection requests for Saudi Arabia and several neighbouring Gulf countries. UNHCR services are free, but the office says it cannot register every request it receives.
Official Asylum & Legal Stay Source
UNHCR provides limited protection intervention and, in selected cases, legal advice or assistance. Keep Saudi immigration status valid where possible and obtain a qualified Saudi lawyer immediately if detention or removal is threatened. Registration with UNHCR does not renew an iqama, visitor visa or work permission.
