How to legalize Nigerian documents for Lithuania through Nigerian MFA, the Nigerian Embassy in Vilnius and the Lithuanian MFA when required.
Start with the receiving authority
Use this three-stage chain only when the Lithuanian receiving authority requires legalization. A university or qualification evaluator may instead ask for direct academic evidence or verification.
What Lithuania actually requires
For a Nigerian public document submitted for legalization in Lithuania, the current official sequence is Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, legalization by Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Lithuania, then legalization by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Lithuania’s official mission directory lists the Nigerian Embassy in Vilnius. This removes the need to guess which foreign embassy represents Lithuania in Nigeria.
Step by step
Confirm that legalization is required
Ask the Lithuanian authority, registry, school or employer for its current document checklist before starting the chain.
Prepare the Nigerian document
Obtain the correct original or official record. Add issuer verification, notarization or education authentication only if the document type or receiving authority requires it.
Complete Nigerian MFA authentication
Start through Advanced Consular Services, upload the requested file and pay through the live method. Then follow the portal’s appointment step for physical vetting.
Use Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Lithuania
Follow the Nigerian Embassy in Vilnius instructions for its legalization stage. Confirm the current submission method before sending an original.
Complete Lithuanian MFA legalization
Submit the document through the Lithuanian MFA process and then give it to the receiving authority that requested it.
Translation
The Lithuanian MFA accepts documents in English for its legalization service, so an English Nigerian document does not need Lithuanian translation merely to complete that stage. A civil registry or another receiving body may still require a Lithuanian translation for the later application.
Study and qualification recognition
Lithuanian MFA tells study applicants to ask the educational institution whether legalization is required. Do not assume that every Nigerian academic document must complete the full legalization chain.
For qualification recognition, SKVC has Nigeria-specific evidence rules. Secondary-school applicants may need WAEC or NECO result access details. Higher-education applicants may need the diploma and an official transcript sent directly by the university. SKVC does not require translation of documents issued in English.
Common mistakes
- Describing the second stage vaguely as an accredited or representing embassy.
- Stopping after Nigerian MFA authentication when the Lithuanian legalization chain is required.
- Adding Federal Ministry of Education authentication to every academic case without a current checklist.
- Ordering Lithuanian translation for the MFA legalization stage when the document is already in English.
- Treating legalization as a substitute for SKVC qualification recognition.
