Nigerian Document Legalization for Belgium
Belgian Embassy legalization is document-specific. All documents must first have Nigerian MFA authentication. Extra requirements depend on the document type.
What Belgium actually requires
Legalization takes place over the counter at the Belgian Embassy in Abuja by e-Appointment. The appointment must be in the applicant’s name, and the embassy’s current page says payment should be made only after the embassy confirms that the application is ready for payment.
The correct preparation depends on the document. Do not use one general checklist for every civil, academic or family record.

The embassy publishes separate rules for birth and death records, academic certificates and transcripts, affidavits, parental consent, Annex 32, police certificates and marriage certificates.
Step by step, from Nigeria
Identify the Belgian procedure and document
Confirm what the Belgian visa office, commune, university or other authority has requested. Then match the record to the document-specific embassy requirements.
Complete the required Nigerian verification
Birth and death records require the NPC verification process and embassy-specific token described by the embassy. Academic certificates and transcripts require education-ministry authentication. A marriage certificate not issued by the Federal Marriage Registry requires Ministry of Interior confirmation.
Authenticate the document through Nigerian MFA
All documents presented for Belgian Embassy legalization must first be authenticated by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Start through ACS, which includes online entry, upload, payment, tracking and a physical-vetting appointment stage.
Submit at the Belgian Embassy by e-Appointment
Follow the current embassy page for the appointment, legalization form, submission and payment instructions. Do not book in an agent’s name, and do not pay before the embassy sends the stated payment notice.
Translation
The Belgian Embassy’s legalization page does not create one translation rule for every Nigerian document. Translation requirements depend on the Belgian authority and the language of the procedure. Ask the commune, visa authority, university or other receiver which language and translator it accepts before ordering a translation.
Recognition is separate
For academic documents, the embassy currently requires education-ministry authentication, MFA authentication on the original and an official institution-issued transcript. Student copies and online WASSC or NECO printouts are not accepted. Academic or professional recognition in Belgium remains a separate decision.

Use the current embassy checklist because document verification and appointment arrangements can change. The embassy also requires the new digital police certificate, specific handling for non-federal marriage certificates, and personal signing at the embassy for parental consent and Annex 32.
