Malta for Nigerians
Malta attracts Nigerians with English-language study, employer-sponsored work and life in a small European Union and Schengen country. Opportunities exist in hospitality, healthcare, gaming and other services, but housing is expensive, the labour market is limited and long-term residence depends on maintaining a valid qualifying route.

Study in Malta
Study begins with admission to a licensed Maltese institution, followed by the long-stay visa and residence process for the course. English is widely used, but not every private course has the same academic standing, work conditions or post-study options. Confirm the provider's licence, programme level, tuition, refund terms and total living cost before paying.
The student must show how tuition, accommodation, insurance and living costs will be paid. Use the current Identity Malta and visa checklist for the amount and acceptable evidence. A sponsor letter without matching income or bank records may not establish that the money is genuinely available.
Work in Malta
The Single Permit combines permission to live and work for a named Maltese employer. The employer normally submits the application, and the worker cannot treat the contract as permission to start. Faster or specialist channels, including the Key Employee Initiative and EU Blue Card, apply only where the role, salary and qualifications meet their rules. Verify the employer and application reference.
The principal route is the employer-specific Single Permit. The Key Employee Initiative and EU Blue Card cover qualifying skilled cases, while seasonal or other categories have separate conditions. The permit remains tied to the approved work, so confirm the procedure before changing employer or accepting a second job.
Permanent residency and citizenship in Malta
EU long-term resident status can generally be considered after five years of lawful and continuous residence, subject to stable resources, accommodation and integration conditions. The time and permit category must qualify. Malta's paid investment programmes are separate from the ordinary work or study route and should not be confused with permanent residence earned through employment.
Ordinary naturalisation is discretionary and usually needs long residence, and Malta is known more for its separate, expensive citizenship-by-investment route than for a quick naturalisation path. Malta allows dual citizenship, so you would keep your Nigerian passport.
Family Reunification in Malta
A qualifying Maltese citizen or resident may bring a spouse and minor children. The route depends on the sponsor's status and, for some residents, a required period of lawful stay. The application examines stable resources, suitable accommodation, health cover and the genuine family relationship. Confirm when the sponsor's permit becomes eligible before planning the family's move.
Spouse and minor children are the principal categories.
The sponsor provides Maltese identity or residence evidence, income, accommodation, health cover and documents proving the relationship.
Stable resources must meet the current rule for the household. Check the amount and evidence accepted when applying.
Marriage and birth records, sponsor status, income and accommodation evidence are central. Nigerian documents may need legalization and accepted translation.
Marriage in Malta
A civil marriage is arranged through Malta's Marriage Registry within the Public Registry. The Registry checks the couple's identity and freedom to marry and tells foreign nationals which records and declarations are required.
A Nigerian applicant may need a passport, birth certificate and official evidence of being single or otherwise legally free to marry. A final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate is required where applicable. Confirm whether Nigerian documents need legalization and certified English or Maltese translation.
Submit the marriage application and supporting records within the Registry's notice period, answer any request for further documents and arrange the ceremony after the checks. Marriage does not automatically grant Maltese residence; the family application is separate.
Using Nigerian Documents in Malta
Obtain the correct Nigerian record, then ask the Maltese receiving authority whether it needs full legalization. If MFA authentication is required, start through ACS. Ask Identità or Malta's Consular Services Office to identify the competent onward route in writing. Do not send an original to an unconfirmed mission or a visa centre for legalization.
Where the receiving authority requires Nigerian MFA authentication, begin through Advanced Consular Services online, then follow the appointment instructions for physical vetting. Check the portal for current location, documents and payment. Education-ministry and Ministry of Interior steps depend on the specific document and receiving procedure.
Identità generally requires third-country public documents it receives to be apostilled or fully legalized. Nigeria cannot issue an apostille. The competent onward office for Nigerian documents has not been verified. Confirm the route in writing with the receiving Maltese authority or Consular Services Office before sending originals.
Identità requires a translation into English or Maltese for third-country public documents that are partly or wholly in another language. An English Nigerian document does not need translation for language alone. Check the rules for the particular receiving unit.
NPC birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree, single-status certificate, degree certificate and transcript, WAEC or NECO certificates, and police character certificate.
Asylum & Legal Stay in Malta
A person in Malta can state the wish to seek international protection to the International Protection Agency, immigration or border police, prison authority or detention service. The Agency then gives an appointment to lodge the application. At lodging it records personal details and fingerprints, provides an interpreter if needed and issues an Asylum Seeker's Document while the case is pending.
Official Asylum & Legal Stay Source
The later interview is the applicant's opportunity to explain the protection case fully. Legal aid and established Maltese refugee organisations can assist, especially after a negative decision. Read the appeal information immediately and obtain qualified help before the deadline expires.
