Spain for Nigerians

Spain attracts Nigerians with universities, a large economy, family reunification and routes through skilled work, business and other forms of lawful residence. Spanish is essential for most jobs and daily life, unemployment can make the move from study to work difficult, and applicants should plan for housing costs and a realistic long-term route.

Study in Spain

A Nigerian student needs admission to a recognised Spanish institution and applies for the student visa with the admission, funding, health-cover and accommodation evidence on the consular list. Check whether the course is taught in Spanish or English and whether the qualification gives access to the post-study status expected. Nigerian academic records may need legalization, sworn Spanish translation and, for some programmes, formal recognition.

Funds requirement

Spain measures student maintenance funds against the monthly IPREM public-income index. A student normally shows 100 per cent of the applicable IPREM for each month, with additional amounts for family members. Prepaid accommodation may be treated under the current checklist. Use the figure published for the application year rather than an old euro amount from a blog.

Work in Spain

For ordinary employment, a Spanish employer applies for the initial residence and work authorisation for a named worker and job. The occupation, salary and recruitment conditions must meet the route. Separate procedures cover highly qualified professionals, the EU Blue Card, intra-company transfers and self-employment. A contract is important, but it is not permission to begin work on its own.

Routes available

The realistic routes are employer-sponsored residence and work, highly qualified employment, the EU Blue Card, intra-company transfer and an independently viable self-employment plan. Ask the employer or authorised representative for the filing reference and decision before paying for travel.

Permanent residency and citizenship in Spain

Permanent residence, called long-term residence, generally comes after five years of continuous legal residence. Spain also keeps roots-based routes known as arraigo for people already living in the country, though those depend on specific personal circumstances rather than being a planned path.

Citizenship

Citizenship is the slow part for Nigerians: naturalisation needs ten years of legal residence, against just two years for nationals of Latin American countries, the Philippines and a few others. Spain also asks you to renounce your previous nationality, because Nigeria is not on its dual-nationality list, so becoming Spanish would mean giving up the Nigerian passport. Permanent residence does not carry that condition.

Family Reunification in Spain

Family reunification lets a legal resident bring a spouse and children, subject to income and housing conditions after a period of legal residence.

Eligible family members

Spouse or registered partner, and children under 18 or dependent. Conditions apply to ascendants in limited cases.

Sponsor requirement

Sponsor must be a legal resident who meets income and adequate housing conditions, usually after at least one year of residence and with a renewal in hand.

Income requirement

A minimum income condition applies, based on the IPREM index and family size. Confirm the current threshold with the immigration office.

Evidence needed

Marriage or partnership certificate, birth certificates, and proof of income and housing. Follow the checklist for the particular Spanish family application. Legalization and sworn Spanish translation should be completed only for the records that checklist identifies.

Marriage in Spain

A civil marriage process is opened at the competent Spanish Civil Registry, called the Registro Civil. The registry first checks the identity, marital status and legal capacity of both partners. Some offices interview the couple before approving the marriage.

Documents required

A Nigerian applicant may need a passport, birth certificate, proof of address and evidence of single status or legal capacity to marry, plus any final divorce decree or former spouse's death certificate. The Civil Registry decides which records require Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, Spanish Embassy legalization and sworn Spanish translation.

Process notes

File the marriage papers with the Civil Registry and complete any interview or notice step before the ceremony is authorised. A marriage certificate does not by itself regularise an expired status or give the Nigerian spouse residence. The family residence application follows separately.

Using Nigerian Documents in Spain

Start with the checklist for the actual Spanish procedure. Prepare the correct Nigerian record, complete MFA authentication through ACS if the checklist requires it, then follow the Spanish Consulate General's current legalization instructions. Keep academic recognition separate.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication

When the Spanish checklist for your procedure requires legalization, begin Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication through Advanced Consular Services. The process starts online and includes a physical-vetting appointment stage. Federal Ministry of Education authentication is not a universal rule for every academic document.

Embassy legalization

Where Spanish consular legalization is required, the Spanish Consulate General in Lagos handles the Spanish step after the required Nigerian authentication. Use the consulate's current legalization instructions for submission.

Translation requirement

Spanish translation requirements belong to the specific visa, civil-registry, study, work or other procedure. The Lagos work-visa and marriage-registration checklists require translation for named foreign documents. Confirm the accepted translator and format before arranging a translation.

Affected document types

NPC birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree, single-status certificate, degree certificate and transcript, WAEC or NECO certificates, and police character certificate.

Asylum & Legal Stay in Spain

Asylum is for people who need protection from persecution or serious harm. It is not a general solution for an expired visa, a lost residence permit, unemployment or a difficult family situation. Spain also has separate legal-stay mechanisms. These include several forms of arraigo, a route for some family members of Spanish nationals, and narrow humanitarian or victim-protection routes. Spain's official protection portal now separates applications formalised before 12 June 2026 from those formalised from that date.

Legal aid / support

If your status has expired, start by identifying the document you held, its expiry date, any application already filed, and any notice you have received. If you are considering asylum, use the correct official protection pathway for the date your application was formalised. Free legal assistance and specialist organisations such as CEAR or ACCEM may help with appointments, interviews, reception and appeals.

Asylum is not requested through the Spanish Embassy in Nigeria. A refusal, removal or expulsion notice should be reviewed promptly because the notice and service date control the next step.
